This receiver is a beast! I've had it for about 2 weeks now and I love it! The only drawback is its sheer size and the heat that it generates. Because of both of those, I had to remove the glass shelf above it on my component rack. Most shelving is rated for 50 lbs, but this unit is 52 lbs. That's not really going to make a difference but, due to its size, there wasn't enough clearance between the top of the unit and the self above it to dissipate the heat generated. That being said, I can't find a single thing thing to complain about. I loved the speaker calibration. It has a plug-in microphone and you just set the microphone where you want the sweet spot and the receiver does the rest. It detects how many speakers you have and adjusts volumes based on speaker size and distance to the microphone. My surround has never sounded so good! The remote is rather large, but it did do a good job learning from my other remotes, with the exception of my HD-DVD player.....won't control that one. It's a dead technology already and I'll eventually take the plunge and replace it with a Blu-Ray so I'm not too concerned. Over-all, this is a great buy. The drawbacks are minor and the good features more than make up for them. My comlaints tend to be nit-picky, but that's only because I can't find much to complain about. I couldn't touch a THX certified receiver for anywhere near what I paid for this one. The THD and signal-to-noise ratio specs are excellent. I highly recommend it!!Read full review
well i just recentlly bought and hooked this reciever up. its got plenty of connections on the back and hdmi inputs on it. easy setup menues right on the tv with a video wire witch is a plus. and sounds great weather its a dvd, blu-ray,or ps3 game. Some drawbacks i didnt know about but alot of newer recievers are doing it i dont now why its that it only has an on/standby button no botton for just shutting the thing completey off so it is allway drawing some power my elecrice bills high enough so i just put it on a surge protecter and flip the swich when done using the unit. and, that if you want to just use an hdmi cable the best cable for audio/video all on just one wire the newest thing out with it they dont just pass through when the unit is off such as say your satellite /cable receiver is wired with just an hdmi straight to the reciever which has 1 out back to the tv it will only work if the reciever is on. which myself anywway usually only use it for video games/a good movie on tv or dvd. so if i want to use my tv and just watch nothing great just browsing maby watch the news say i dont need souround with ya get me. so i wired another wire i had to buy to my tv straight from the box for that reason. but im not even sure if any just pass through they should. but overall i got it for a great price and sounds great what i got it for.and would recomend for the most part.Read full review
Onkyo makes great receivers and this is one of the best. Some newer units have hdmi issues but this one doesn't. I use it for audio only I ran a hdmi splitter from my cable box to the tv and to my receiver. I paired it with Polk Audio speakers and I used a splitter on the subwoofer out to have 4 subs. This system has all the power you need and more. I've never enjoyed movies so much.

I purchased this receiver because it has all the new formats of sound to play with so far everything has been great and sounds great. I have purchased new speakers and they sound great with it. It is easy to assign things to the hdmi inputs and has on screen display to make it even easier. The only two things that I have to complain about are one if you have read the reviews on this item you will read that the audyssey sound setup is very erratic. Which is true it does not program your speakers right, so make sure that once you use it to set up your system go back in and adjust your speakers to the levels you want. The only other thing to complain about is that it doesn't have switching built in on it. But since the next cheapest receiver that does have it built in is $400 more I think I will be ok. Other than those minor things this is probably one of the best receivers out there for the money I highly recomend this system.Read full review
If you get a chance to see this in action, take it. I know Onkyo was really on the ball when they made this receiver. Yeah I had to download the manual and it was kind of spacey, but in the end I set it up and think it really rocks! This is too big for my room but the room is hugely exciting to be in now that the system is set up. You just want to listen to the sound, whether it is music or TV. Who gives a crap about what the neighbors think! By the way I hooked some Onkyo 7.1 channel speakers to this and had it feeding an LG brand LED TV monitor. I used a Samsung blue ray disc player plus a Panasonic DVD/VCR combo and DISH as inputs. I am also trying to hook up a Window Media Center extender to it. It has more than enough ports to configurate all that.
Featuring a true 130 watts per channel with all 7 channels driven you can't buy a better receiver. With a $30 discount I got my first 805 brand new for $639 & change. I researched the Onkyo 875 & couldn't justify spending another $360 for a USB port & 10 more watts per channel. Likewise I couldn't justify spending $760 more for HD radio & the 140 watts in the Onkyo 905. But that 905 is a steal at $1,000+ with the toraoidal transformer. & I was tempted. Basically I looked at Yamahas, Marantz, Dennons & Onkyo. Came down to Dennon's 2808, 3808 or their 4808 against Onkyo's 705, 805, 875 or 905! The Dennon 2808 & Onkyo 705 just didn't have quite enough power. I decided to try the Onkyo 805 because in several different surveys the 805s were rated # One in the high end, 7 channel, plus 100 watt per channel category. Those surveys included all the receivers I've mentioned & more costing up to 5+ grand. After I made that decision I bought a very sturdy stand for TV, cable box, DVD Recorder (which has a USB port) & above all this receiver. I made sure there was a lot of headroom for the "heat factor" which has not been a problem. If the 805 didn't meet my needs I was going to return it & up-grade to the 905 because bottom line, cost was not my primary goal. The 805 was up to task! My AV room is aprox. 18 feet by 14 feet. With out a separate amp, I have this thing pushing Polk RTi12s up front, a CSi5 center, two RTi6s rear-surround & two FXi A6s for surround channels. A Polk DSW Pro 600 provides base for everything under 80 htz. At -10 db it has my speakers smoking. At -5 db it's live. If I push it to +10 db there's no distortion what-so-ever & much more sound than I will need. All this while sending crystal clear signal to a 1080p Panasonic 50" Plasma. This thing allows me to equalize all channels individually as well as set the volume for each channel individually. I was willing to spend upwards 10 times for speakers & receiver but I didn't want to buy products just to brag that I owned them. I wanted quality products that would exceed meeting my needs. I could write volumes on the 805 but when all's said & done what was most important to me is that when I was finished buying speakers & receiver to compliment the TV, I would have an audio video arrangement that would "never" leave me wishing I had more! The longer I worked with this 805 the more I learned how to use it & the more I loved it. Value wise Onkyo's own 875 & 905 can't touch this. Yamaha, Denon & Marantz are not even close with bang for the buck. I set up another full system in a differnt room & was unwilling to settle for Zone 2 limitations. I wanted the full 7.1 in the second system as well. This arangement is a full complement of Infinty speakers & a little 37" Samsung 1080p LCD. When people write that they like it so much they would buy it again, believe them! I did exactly that. My second 805 ran me $506 total. I've hooked up a Panasonic BD30 to each system. All I need these 805s to do is to channel the clearest possible signal from both audio & video sources & drive speakers which I set up individually. Hardly anyone is producing genuine 7-1 surround feed yet but when it takes off & Bluray becomes the standard, if you own this future proof classic, you're ready. Right now Onkyo is introducing the slightly up graded 806 which is virtually the same in all the most important features. This means you have a chance to get an 805 for a much better price than I paid.Read full review
This little receiver is the gateway to top quality surround sound!! It packs quite a punch with all the bells and whistles anyone could want. There are other receivers out there that provide slightly better sound and/or feature qualities, but at a much (much) higher cost!! This receiver provides the best BANG for the BUCK!! If you are interested in a QUALITY surround system without getting too high-end, look NO further!! I have been a service technician for a major electronics store for over fifteen years and am HIGHLY involved with surround sound. I have had low-end equipment and high-end, custom equipment. This little engine's ride is WORTH the ticket price!!
I bought this receiver to replace a Denon 3801 that I have owned for over 10 years. The Denon still works fine, but I needed a receiver with HDMI capabilities. The Onkyo is a large and heavy unit. It generates quite a bit of heat so it needs to be placed where there is sufficient space above and around it to allow the heat to escape. The advantages of this receiver are: 1) lots of power. (I have it in a 400 square foot room and it fills it with clean sound driving fairly inefficient speakers.) 2) plenty of surround processing options (more than I'll ever need) 3) many connection capabilities (HDMI, component, etc) 4) high quality construction I'm driving a set of large old Mirage bi-polar speakers with the Onkyo and it does a great job with them. I have a Blue-ray player, a Comcast DVR and a CD player connected. Set-up was fairly straight forward although I don't have the speaker set-up microphone. The speaker connectors are high-quality and allowed me to use banana plugs. Overall, I am very pleased with the Onkyo, particularly considering I paid less than $300 for it, including shipping.Read full review

this amp. with klipsh speakers is the best I've had. when turned up the highs are absolutley clear. no squeal or break up. I'm near deaf so I have to turn up to hear. I also use blu ray dvd this picture is as clear as I've seen. I've had dynaco, macintosh, carver all with klipsh speakers and they do not come close to this receiver. for the money this can't be beat.
