The Enchanted Ballet
The programme dates from 1955. It was originally shot in colour, but only this black and white version remains. The video technology is primitive, the film is scratched and blotchy, and the picture goes out of focus round the edges. The sound is mono and gets a bit wobbly towards the end. The studio is small and the production values low. So do I like it? I absolutely love it. Every second of this amazing ballet is spellbinding and even the fuzziness of the picture seems to add to its magic. Much of the enchantment comes from Margot Fonteyn, who radiates purity and beauty of spirit, and the rest comes from the legendary Frederick Ashton as the evil Carabosse, who really has to be seen to be believed. No words can express my delight in watching this historic performance. Its fuzzy black-and-white gives a fairy-tale look that even HD video couldn't provide. If you value art over glitter, this is the version you need.
