I was working too hard to take time out to see this at the cinema last year so when I saw the DVD for sale on EBay I kept bidding until I got it - and yes it was well worth my time... In fact I would say it was worth buying and watching just to see Michelle Pfeiffer's character aging - all of a sudden her bust just sags (Terrifying!!). Robert De Niro's character is brilliant too. Wall is a village in Victorian England bordered by a wall - the wall is guarded 24 hours a day but once or twice someone has managed to trick their way past the guard.. Our hero, Tristan, is the result of one such passage, his father in England and his Mother the slave of a witch in the magical kingdom of Stormhold on the other side - he is determined to win the hand of the lovely Victoria and to do so sets off in search of a fallen star. Our Hero is not the only one seeking the star, a group of witches are also looking for her and a troop of Royal brothers are looking for the jewel which our star, who actually turns out to be the beautiful Yvaine, is wearing - their adventures take them to the "stars" and back again. Will the witches get back their youth? Who will inherit the throne of Stormhold? And will anyone eat Yvaine's heart??? I'm not going to spoil your enjoyment - buy this film, it is great!! I actually bought this DVD because I had seen the video for Take That's "Rule the World" and thought the film it was showing looked good - and it was.I went on the computer to find out which film it was for and then sent for the DVD.It was a brilliant fantasy story that was watchable all the way through. Loads of action,a really different story, witchcraft and funny incidents came to a acceptable conclusion - yu weren't really sure what would happen till the end. It's the kind of film you could watch again.Recommended for anyone who wants a good film. Claire Danes made a good heroine(I thought it was Gwynneth Paltrow at first as did someone else I know who has seen this film).I liked Claire better.
A great family film. I would recommend this film to all. An epic fairy tale in hope of wooing a beautiful girl, Tristan who is played by Charlie Cox promises to bring her a falling star, but hes in for the adventure of his life when he discovers the star is actually a beautiful girl named Yvaine played by Claire Danes. When an old witch Lamia who is played by Michelle Pfeiffer attempts to steal the stars Yvaines youth. Tristen must protect her at all costs. Also staring in this film Robert De Nero, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais and Peter O'Toole
Five Big bright stars NO DOUBTS I saw this at the cinema recently- what a terrific film! Read the novel years ago, heard it was coming out as a movie... waited patiently... Exceeded ANY expectations! Bought the Soundtrack, and the Take That single "Rule the World" - get 'warm fuzzies' every time I hear the song... cried my eyes out at the film :) Can't wait for the DVD... A real 'feelgood film'!
