About this product

Product Information

One of TV's longest-running crime dramas (only LAW & ORDER would surpass its record-setting 12-year run), the 1970s television series HAWAII FIVE-O captivated audiences with its smart and stylish take on the standard policier formula. Filmed entirely on the Hawaiian archipelago, the action-packed series followed the crime-fighting adventures of an elite state-police squad anchored by quintessential tough guy Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and his detective team of Danny 'Danno' Williams (James MacArthur), Chin Ho Kelly (Kam Fong), and Kono Kalakaua (Zulu). Almost singlehandedly rewriting the book on police dramas, the series distinguished itself with intricate plotting, inventive cinematography, exotically beautiful locations, and, of course, an indelible theme song and timeless catchphrase ('book 'em, Danno!'). The iconic show's third series is presented here in its entirety.

  • The top cop show of 1970. Big budget, good writing, strong guest stars, great locations, and a dominant performance by Jack Lord

Probably the top cop show in 1970, amidst strong competition. The writing continues to be very good, with an early highlight being the `Ransom' episode. The guest stars include Martin Sheen (again as a shady lawyer) and a very young Anne Archer. The standard of acting is very good, partly because top shows didn't have to compromise between looks and talent back in 1970, unlike a decade later. As always, the sunshine and tropical scenery are picturesque, the tourist hotels are lavish, and McGarret's office.is literally palatial. This makes a strong contrast with the grubby flop-houses of Hotel Street, the gritty night clubs, and the smoky backroom poker rooms of the criminal element. Jack Lord remains very intense, though not quite as on edge as in Season One. McGarrrett is a little less athletic than in earlier seasons, though still the equal of men 20 years younger and 50 pounds heavier. The USA underwent significant cultural change during the early years of the show. In Season One, McGarrett confronted hippies, and the writing was sympathetic to servicemen exploited on R&R. Through Seasons Two & Three, McGarrett, himself, remains true blue, because that is essential to his character. However, there are a number of stories in which older servicemen, and even war heroes, are shown as criminals. This reflects the change in mood of US society, following the military setbacks of 1968.
