Having always been a fan of the treatment that the Beeb give to period drama"s, their 1980"s version of Jamaica Inn must rate as one of the best. Everybody remembers the Hitchcock film with Charles Laughton, but this popped up on our screens for usual sunday tea-time slot. Not only is this a very true adaptation of the book, but casting director for once, got it right.Who can forget the fiesty performance of Jane Seymour as Mary Yellan, Trevor Eve, more noted for his "Shoestring" and more recently "waking The Dead" is brilliant as Jem Merlin. Of course, top acting honours go to one our best ever actors,Patrick Macgoohan, a true heavy weight, in small screen drama, of any persuasion, as the frightening figure as Joss Merlin. Peter Macenery also deserves a mention for wonderful version as the vicar. Seldom is all the casting correct, but in this instance I think Du Maurier would have been delighted. As usual anything that is excellent ALWAYS seems to go on the deleted list, this was the case here, as soon as the d.v.d was marketed, it was withdrawn!! Thank goodness for E-Bay, just managed to get a wonderful second-hand one.Read full review
Having visited Jamaica Inn In Cornwall and then my husband read the book we thought it would be good to see the film and we both enjoyed it.
