In 1936 Russia, retired war hero Sergei Petrovich Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov), his wife Marussia (Ingeborga Dapkunaite), and daughter Nadia (Mikhalkov's real-life daughter) take refuge in the blissful Russian countryside. But the arrival of a mysterious man shatters their hopes for a peaceful existence. Mitia (Oleg Menchikov), who was once Marussia's lover, seems charming at first--he's handsome, plays the piano, and easily wins little Nadia's affections. Gradually it becomes clear that Mitia's visit may have terrible repercussions for the innocent family as the jilted suitor transfigures his personal vendetta against Sergei into an act of political persecution.
