  • Skilled and Humane Direction

Marvellous film by Nadine Labaki. A fascinating glance into another culture. Combines humour and sadness in a naturalistic way. Contains a great range of characters, all experiencing their own problems in life, some managing well and others who feel they are too late to change. I enjoyed this film, along with the other film by this director, “Capernaum”.

  • Somewhat simplistic in parts but nonetheless quite enjoyable, the film equivalent of music that is referred to as 'easy listening'

After seeing the film Capernaum, also by Nadine Labaki, I went straight out and bought this. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as Capernaum, but nevertheless found it enjoyable. Nadine Labaki has this gift of being able to cast a light on ordinary people living ordinary lives and make them entertaining. I suppose the subject matter is like a kitchen sink drama, but with Labaki's take on things that makes the stories more whimsical and less 'staged' the characters are so convinced one could be forgiven for thinking one is watching a documentary, simple stories evoked by complex characters, who don't overstate their personna but just go about their day in a peculiar way that makes the characters so endearing. I contrast this with the work of the more established 'stars' in the media who in my opinion tend to overstate their part, for effect I guess, but I feel they try too hard. That is not the case with Caramel, their impact is subtle but all the more engaging. I have got fed up of trawling through the 'blockbusters' and 'best ever' and 'greatest story ever told' films and finding they are formulaic and predictable, and I consider myself lucky that I can happily watch a film whether it comes from Hollywood or Hindustan, Nadine Labaki has produced real gems.
