Own a piece of comedy history
Not only is this show intensely funny, it is a peek into the foundation of modern American comedy. The Upright Citizen's Brigade is much more than a TV show, it is a theater, a group of performers, and a creative force that has influenced much of the comedy scene. Did you ever wonder what happened after Stand-Up comedy went away? This is it. The State, Reno 911, Nick Kroll, Andy Daly, Children's Hospital, Paul F Tompkins, Andy Richter, NTSF:SD:SUV, Comedy Bang Bang, Playing House, the list of comedy projects and performers that began at or were influenced by this group is incalculable, and this show is a very good showcase of the humor, the perspective, and the fast-paced stream of consciousness style that so many great performers learned on the UCB stage.
However, this is not really improv comedy. The show is actually tightly scripted, with relatively good production values, though obviously it was not a milllion-dollar an episode program, and the performances are just wonderful. Ian Roberts truly stands out as one of the greatest character actors of our time, along with the genius of Amy Poehler, Mat Walsh, and Watt Besser. There are very few other actors in the series, apart from extras and real people filmed in subversive, candid-camera style real time events, sprinkled through the otherwise scripted show. The UCB was essentially doing flash mobs or street improv before those were things. If you look very carefully, though, you will see some of your favorite stars lurking in the many sketches.
But no one wants to watch a treatise on comedy, and no one is still reading this review. I am a long-winded puke pontificating on things I claim to understand while fully aware that my veneer of knowledge is paper thin, and underneath, I am nothing. I am ego with no substance. I'm a kitty-kat and you're my momma.
