G.F. Newman is an excellent dramatist and this was a ground-breaking piece of TV drama in its time. Apart from the ethnicity of the characters which would no doubt now be more various, this holds up extremely well to the modern eye as a piece of sophisticatedly telling drama. Police corruption was a major systemic problem until: (a) proper steps were taken to address it within the police; (b) statutory measures were put in place including the recording of police interviews and; (c) the judiciary learned to take a more clear-eyed view of the whole matter rather than (as they once did) to take police evidence as Gospel even if it was more than apocryphal. The writer continues this historical theme in a periodic (and period) extended radio drama series entitled: G.F. Newman's The Corrupted.
