Additional InformationIn TIME WITHOUT PITY, director Joseph Losey delivers yet another multi-layered, atmospheric thriller. The film follows an alcoholic father (Michael Redgrave) who struggles to save his innocent son from the gallows, even as a cruel rival (Leo McKern) continues to keep him on the defensive. This was Losey's first film under his own name after his McCarthy-era blacklisting, and it retains the director's striking blend of drama and social commentary. Photographed by the legendary Freddie Francis (ELEPHANT MAN, THE STRAIGHT STORY).

  • Superb Michael Redgrave in tense melodrama

This film is carried by Michael Redgrave. His intense, teary eyed performance is superb. He plays seedy and does little to make his troubled character attractive to the audience. The film is an excellent against the clock thriller in which Redgrave - a recovering alcoholic - must save his son from the scaffold. The cast is full of famous British actors - and has Leo McKern in an explosive role as the boss of a car salesroom. The film is not faultless - it strays in to melodrama - but it is honest. Based on a play by the Welsh writer Emlyn Williams, this is a fine film which deserves a higher reputation. Made in 1957 by the exiled Joseph Losey it is one of his least ponderous films.
