I saw these two BBC tv productions when they first appeared as children's serials quite a few years ago. I haven't seen the more recent cinematic adaptations so I can't compare them. Prince Caspian is probably the least engaging of the Chronicles of Narnia - not the strongest or most complex of narratives - but it is given a brisk, workmanlike treatment here. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is episodic but great fun, a series of mini-adventures bound into one novel; a young Samuel West makes an attractive, noble and judicious young ruler and the odious Eustace (who meets his nemesis and is transformed in more ways than one on the journey) is an interesting child character, and well acted here. Everyone will have his or her own favourite island and encounter herein; I like Ramandu's Island - where Caspian meets his future bride - and the travellers' meeting with the Monopods. The special effects can't compete with the film versions, I know, but this DVD was new and incredibly cheap, and children will enjoy the stories nonetheless.Read full review
