The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan
This DVD, along with any Cesar Millan publications, is excellent in describing just how NOT to train dogs. His approach to dealing with immediate behavioural problems (in as brutal a way as he considers necessary) might be viewed as 'successful' in the eyes of the public but they FAIL spectacularly to address any existing and/or underlying problems with the animal, and what's more …. his methods are unnecessarily cruel. It's reasonable to suppose an aggressive dog might be beaten into submission using such (Cesar) methods as hitting, kicking, near-strangulation and (would you believe?) electric shock but fearful and stressed-out dogs will often display aggressive tendencies (attack being their form of defence). So, whereas dealing with situations in a gung-ho way might curtail any dog's unwanted response/aggression, it does nothing to address the underlying psychological problems experienced by the dog itself. In any new situation the dog would likely resort to previous negative behaviour (when Cesar wasn't present) and I'd personally fear for the safety of any small child left in the vicinity of such a dog. If his methods were safe then why the need to state in his shows “Don't try this at home”? Cesar Millan's methods of training have over the past 30-years or so been considered outdated, ineffective, ill-conceived and unnecessarily cruel by the majority of professional dog trainers. I would recommend “Beyond Cesar Millan” for critiques. I don't personally have any axe to grind with regards training methods, I'm just a concerned dog owner and hate seeing unnecessary pain and suffering inflicted on (any) animal. If however you're a bully, enjoy inflicting pain, are a control-freak or you simply love watching 'exciting' gratuitous violence, then maybe you'd be happier watching Cesar Millan!Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Understand your puppy teach it to be a dog in your pack with you as the leader happy days
A life times experience of dogs. The author grew up in a culture where dogs were things. They did the humans dirty work, lived like a disposable tool and had little or no place in the home or human society. He realised that they had more to offer if he could understand them and their pack phycology. When he moved to the USA he encountered a new phenomenon, Pet dogs in all their shapes sizes usefulness, excellent companions and spoiled lost souls. His growing realisation that each dog needed to be a member of a pack, learning this from its mother and then living its life with a pack leader and the family. Still a dog but safe in its place able to love, defend, amuse and be a life companion to its master. This is captured in the book but you quickly realise that you are on a journey of comprehension being given the tools to raise a happy healthy friend for life.
