About this product

Product Information

From Renny Harlin, the director of CLIFFHANGER and DIE HARD 2, and starring Geena Davis (THELMA & LOUISE) and Matthew Modine (MARRIED TO THE MOB), this action-packed adventure film sees a tough-as-barnacles lady pirate, named Morgan Adams fight off her villainous uncle while attempting to retrieve a buried treasure hidden away on Cutthroat Island.<BR>Before Morgan's pirate father dies of a wound obtained in battle, he tells her about the hidden riches and the map that will lead her to them. Morgan assumes command of her father's ship and sets off to find the treasure. To help her accomplish her mission, she turns to William Shaw, an educated slave who is the only one who can interpret the part of the map written in Latin. However, Morgan's evil Uncle Dawg and his band of swashbuckling henchmen stand in their way. Plenty of sword-fighting action ensues before the treasure can be found.

  • Why Cutthroat Island is STILL the best!!

First of all I love pirate films. I love the Pirates Of The Caribbean films. I love the older films. But we need to look at Cutthroat Island in it's place in time. Apart from the films that have been dotted through history there had not been a pirate film for many years. We won't talk about Pirates with Walter Matthau here!!. So suddenly along comes Cutthroat Island - a big, big budget - but at a time when pirate films were not in the public consciousness. The same could be said about science fiction and Star Wars. Cutthroat Island did not unfortunately capture the public's imagination as Star Wars did. What is seldom given credit for is following on from pirate films that had gone before (not POTC that came afterwards) Cutthroat Island captured the essence of the genre in a spectacular way - and boy it did it in bucketfuls - but far better than any predecessor. It kept the humour (unlike a lot of genre's the pirate genre is tolerant of great flexibility). There is huge big budget action, excitement, adventure, humour (but not too much). It works on all levels as a bridge between what had gone before and what was yet to come. Without Cutthroat Island would there ever even have been POTC?? Whereas POTC is loaded with humour and CGI Cutthroat is not. Most of it was done for real. And no ghostly supernatural elements either. AND......perhaps most importantly.....it had a FEMALE LEAD!!!! One of the first big budget films to feature an ACTION HEROINE!!! Something Geena Davis reprised brilliantly in The Long Kiss Goodnight. And in case you pirate fans out there don't know - yes- there were female pirates. Chiefly Mary Read and Anne Bonny, but I'm sure there were others not recorded in the history books. Mary and Anne were strong brave women who outshone Jack Rackham's cowardice (although it was his flag that was used in Cutthroat Island). To see an actress doing all the stuff we had previously only been allowed to see action men do was fantastic!!!! (No I haven’t forgotten Jean Peters and Maureen O’Hara from the 1940’s but they were restrained by moral codes). Geena is brilliant - every inch the believable pirate - strong and tough but oozing sensuality with her unconventional beauty. AND she is a pirate that displays injuries as the film progresses….making it all the more real. I’m sure that some of those cuts were real given the punishing action she went through. Geena put her all into that film.....her famous quote when filming ended: ''I can't believe I've got to stop being a pirate!''. CHEERS GEENA!!! So all you fellow men out there who want to get your wives and girlfriends to watch a pirate film - THIS IS THE ONE!!!!
