I originally bought a brand new Samsung Blu-ray player but it didn't have an Digital Optical Output for audio, so I found this barely used older model here on ebay at 2/3 the price of a new one. I have been enjoying it's ease of use, fairly quick loading of disc and the way the on screen display of current point in the disc looks like when in Pause Mode. The Up-Converting ability makes the our older format of DVD's look really good on this Blu-ray player. The only issues I've had with my particular player was one rented disc didn't even load, never mind play. The disc was in very good condition with no scratches, etc. But again, you can buy a brand new disc from the store, go home and it won't play. This is really inherent of using any digital disc, since they don't play on all players "always". Also on one more rented disc, it skipped a few times during the movie and I lost quite a few minutes of the story from skipping forward. That disc wasn't in perfect condition by any means, but wasn't too badly scratched either. I did read about Up Dating the System Software to the current one, and this should alleviate any playing issues. But for me, since there has been very little problems, I figure I should leave things the way they are for now unless it becomes a real problem and/or inconvenience to my viewing experience. Hope this review helps anyone thinking of saving a few bucks on an older Samsung Blu-ray player and/or looking for a good player with a Digital Optical Output. Enjoy!Read full review
The GOOD: Fantastic picture and sleek design, I've heard of people complaning about slow booting and pauses on standard DVDs....didn't happen. Boot time was noticable but not annoying. Relatively inexpensive compared with other standalone units. Image quality is outstanding on 1080i but that's all I can provide a review for. Supports onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and bit stream output for all high-resolution audio formats and the Ethernet port for firmware updates is very easy to get too. Also supports 2.0 and onboard DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. Sleak design and multipurpose remote. Overall: Highly recommended. The BAD: Included a useless audio cable, could have been a HMDI. Does not support online NETFLIX streaming.
I was a little worried upon receiving my NEW IN THE BOX blu-ray purchased thru E-Bay. For one thing the "original" box showed some pretty substantial damage to one of the corners of the box. The picture that was shown during the auction did not show the damage. The player itself has worked flawlessly. We love having a blu-ray player joining forces with our new Samsung LCD TV and hope to enjoy it for years to come. I decided to buy it thru ebay because not only a neighbor had done the same thing and received a good product but also because the price. My product was easily $40 to $60 cheaper than buying it from an online retailer or from a Box store. Over all I a very happy with this product and would recommend consumers to do there HOMEWORK before purchasing bigger ticket items such as electronics.Read full review
I bought this blu-ray dvd player because I have also have one of the bid Samsung HD LCD tv's and wanted to be able to use only ONE remote control for both. So far, I have been GROSSLY disappointed in this player. First, it has a loading delay that's VERY annoying. Secondly, and even worse yet, it was built without any kind of cooling fan. After watching 2 movies, I happen just to walk by and turned it off by hand instead of by the remote. Imagine my surprise when I could feel the heat radiating off the player. I bent down and touched it...picked up the front a tad and the botton of the player actually burned almost a blister on my finger. It worries me that this player gets this hot. I'm actually concerned it could be a fire hazard. I'm trying to think of a safe, fire proof way to elevate this player off the wood shelf in the entertainment system it sits on..maybe if air can circulate it won't get so hot...but lets face it, I should NOT have to be doing this for a brand spanking new 2009 blu-ray player. It should NOT get hot enough after 2 movies, just a tad over 3 hours of movie playing, to burn a blister on your fingers. Lately, after a TERRIBLE ordeal with Samsung Customer Service to get resolution on an manufacturing defect in my big screen HD LCD TV (diagnosed by a Samsung Certified Technician here in my home sent by Samsung), in which I had to make over 25 calls to Samsung Customer Service, plus over 10 to Executive Case management, I'm not sure I'll ever buy anything electronic by Samsung again. Samsung returned only ONE phone call in over a year while I tried to get resolution for the tv. I can't even begin to tell how many times I heard "you'll hear back from us in 3-5 business days", never once was those words honored. To make all this worse, I ended up having to shell out $375 out of MY pocket to get the manufacturing defective tv exchanged. How's that for totally CRAPPY customer service. I strongly suggest anyone considering purchasing anything electronic from Samsung to do some research with Consumer Reports before purchasing anything really expensive. Two days again, Verizon Wireless ended up having to trade my daughters Samsung Glyde touchscreen cell phone for an LG touch screen model. My daughter was on her THIRD Samsung Glyde because the touchscreens would stop functioning rendering the phone virtually UNUSEABLE PERIOD. When asked, Verizon Tech Support told me they had been replacing these phones left and right because of this defective touch screen issue. WATCH OUT AND DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU PURCHASE ANYTHING ELECTRONIC FROM SAMSUNG...Their customer service and caring attitude toward customers who spend thousands with their company simply is the WORST I've ever experienced from any company manufacturing electronics. This latest blu-ray player is the fourth generation model from Samsung. You may be aware of this, (or maybe not) but Samsung's history with their first three players is less than exemplorary. Samsung has definitely got it right this time. Whatever was lacking in the previous players is here now with the BD-P1500. The video looks amazing as it should when you view your movies in 1080p. Although, the BD-1500 does not have the HQV technology as the BD-P1200 has, this model can still upconvert your DVDs to 1080p, and it looks marvelous. The audio is the true upgrade from their previous models. This decodes Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS-ES, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby True HD. As far as the last remaining audio codec DTS-HD Master Audio, this player does not decode, but it will allow the signal to pass through to your receiver, and you will still be able to experience it. If you think about it, it really does make sense - if your receiver did not decode DTS-HD and your blu-ray player does, then you wouldn't be able to hear it anyway - so why not let that expensive receiver do the work for you. The extras include Profile 1.1 (BonusView), which allows some different kinds of bonus features that include Picture in Picture (PIP). Samsung is also promising to include Profile 2.0 in a future upgrade. This feature will allow online bonus material, including chat rooms, and online games (you must hook up your blu-ray player to a high speed internet connection). So, really what else do you need? Nothing! Exactly! The BD-P1500 is the best player out there at the best price, and it only gets better. Get yours today, but not from this guy who wants to sell it to you for $425 + shipping, go to Walmart!Read full review
The quality of picture for the samsung bd-p1500 is great but upgrading to the latest 1.3 firmware version was a hassle...took awhile because it would not connect through the ethernet which is why i bought it, instead i had to try the usb card connection and that didn't work the player would say usb connected but would not read the upgrade so then i had to download the cd version but i only had dvd-r and it does require cd-r so i had to go buy some. then i had to use nero to burn an image onto my hard drive then back to the cd and finalize the disc don't forget to finalize the disc, i went through 5 cd-r's before i got it right. Something i didn't know about blu ray and high definition is that when you hook up the 1080p it renders the format button on your tv inoperable so you cannot adjust the picture size to better fit your wide screen tv. So the size you get with the cropped off top and bottom is all you get. I lose about 3-1/2" on the top and about 4 inches off the bottom. I have a 73" 1080p mitsubishi and the picture is unbelievable model# 73834. I love directv hd 1080i, the picture is awesome the only problem is when you are watching a hd 1080i movie sequence that is moving fast it becomes blurry, so i bought this blu ray player 1080p to watch these movies without the blur and this works great. But my new problem is now instead of watching a great looking 73" picture i am watching probably a 60" or 65" great quality smaller picture because i cannot adjust the picture size with blu ray, it is what it is, i wish wide screen movies would fill up the entire wide screen picture. well i heard that dishnetwork has 1080p now maybe i'll have to switch to dish and purchase these movies on pay per view and then of course sell my samsung 1080p on ebay...then i can enjoy the full 73" mitsubishi dlp so far i have not seen a better picture for the size...even little 40 and 50 inch lcd screens like the sony aquos don't come close. If all blu ray players are the same and crop the picture then i recommend buying the cheapest one you can find. I was lucky and picked this one up for $240.00 after shipping and everything. This was a great buy at 240 but if i had paid 360 to 400 like it retails at the stores then i would be asking for my money back! something else i'm not sure about is that everything seems to be light blu or darker blu on the blu ray maybe it is intentional i don't know but blu just seems to be more blu on blu ray...that is not a joke, my kids and wife noticed it also, i find when watching blu ray at best buy, sears, circuit city, blockbuster this blu phenomenon is the norm...is this a defect of using the blu ray because my xbox 360 hd player "red ray" didn't make everything seem red or brighter red? Well good luck with your blu ray player hunting oh and i almost forgot the blu ray movie superbad which everyone has continued to ask me to watch has not worked on this player even after i did the firmware upgrade? I wonder why? I have not contacted samsung yet to ask them either.Read full review
I purchased this Blu-Ray player because it matched the brand of my home theatre and TV. Although it is asthetically nice, I was surprised to learn that I could not operate the DVD player with my home theatre remote because apparently the Blu-Ray infrared signal is different, even though it is the same brand (Samsung) as the home theatre -- this is what Samsung's technical service department told me. They told me I could go out and purchase a new universal remote to operate all components in my system. Next, the first DVD I put in wouldn't work properly and upon talking to technical service, they said that DVDs are encoded for sound and I must have a bad DVD since my 5.1 system could not pickup the voice track. I've had other DVDs work fine, so I believed this must be the case. I've put in two Blu-Ray DVDs (both rented) and one worked, while the other kept looping back to the main menu screen -- again, since one of the DVDs worked, I am assuming this is a manufacturing issue. So, the jury is out on this. I haven't used the DVD player enough to determine if it is going to be an ongoing issue or if I was just unlucky enough to get two out of five DVDs that had manufacturing defects.Read full review
good picture quality.plays regular dvd blue rays good but wont play the recorded ones good. had to take to repair shop.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
One of the fastest Blue Ray player I seen, it was play my 007 Quantum of Solace menu just in seconds & my Indiana Jones Crystal Skull too, all without require any update, is too much faster than the BD-P1000 & BD-P1400 but a little slowest than Sony PS3, setup is very simple & fast to configure, graphics are pretty. The bad, at first time this model do not include BD Live, internet video player or audio video server like the BD-P1600, by other side I like too much the face of the BD-P1400 because this model is too simple, giving the look of a cheap DVD player.
After reading several reviews of this particular BD player, all I had to do was find one that was affordably priced and it did not matter if it was brand new or refurbished. All I knew was this is the player that I wanted to own. Playback magazine gave it a recommended purchase and AVSforum also gave it high marks so there was no other considerations in this price range for me. I was able to secure a refurbished one and i have been playing it ever since. My first BD disc was 300 and it sure looked awesome on this BD player. Excellent detail and awesome true hd sound. I am simply amazed. It has very good user interface and the remote is very easy to use although I have purchased a universal remote in the meantime and every now and again I would still use the Samsung remote for specific adjustments and fine tuning. I would highly recommend this BD player to anyone that is in the market for and affordable and upgradable player.Read full review
