  • Decent older scanner

This 15 year old scanner has a CCFL light rather than the LEDs of more recent scanners, so the first scan of a session takes longer to warm up the light for true color. Subsequent scans seem reasonably fast. It has a CCD sensor instead of the cheaper CIS you get in most MFPs now. It's definitely sharper than the scanner in my Epson Workforce. It's also more tolerant of originals that don't contact the glass solidly, and can even scan some 3-D objects. For Linux users, a plus for this scanner is that it's 100% supported by SANE. For some other Epson scanners (and all the newer ones), you have to find, download, and install Epson's proprietary driver blob. Reviews from the early 2000s were mixed on this scanner. I don't know whether it's up to pro photography standards, but I find that it does an OK job for my modest home user needs. With this used unit I didn't get the transparency and negative frame that was originally packaged with the scanner, and you probably won't either. It works without it, though it takes a little longer. You place your negatives and slides directly on the glass under the light in the lid and line them up manually. The lid doesn't touch the items, but you can flatten curled negatives by covering them with a plate of glass from a photo frame. If you're looking for a standalone scanner that works out of the box on Linux, this one is a cinch to get going and returns decent results. If you're using Windows or Mac, your options are much wider. While this one will certainly do the job, you have many other good choices.
