Jaroslava Schallerova stars in this Czech fantasy horror based on the novel by Vitezslav Nezval. 13-year-old Valerie (Schallerova) is on the cusp of adolescence as she indulges in Gothic daydreams and fantasies. After she disturbs a thief stealing earrings belonging to her mother, everything changes in the teenager's life and she is forced to mature quickly.

This dreamlike fairytale captures the coming-of-age of a young Czechoslovakian girl. After receiving a pair of earrings, Valerie starts to experience confusing, often Freudian, dreams of fear, hope, and anticipation. As her burgeoning sexuality sparks even more haunting escapades, Valerie must contend with an explosively surreal world that challenges and inspires her. Jaromil Jires' film is surprisingly sensitive and visually spectacular.

    Excellent transfer

    The DVD looks beautiful, bringing the vivid colours and wide range of bright and dark to life on my led tv. The film is probably not everyone's cup of tea, though, as it is not inconsiderably weird. Think Jodorowsky or Svankmeyer. I loved it and the extras are well worth watching
