Product Information

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * From a preeminent presidential historian comes a superb and important (The New York Times Book Review) saga of America's wartime chief executives Fascinating and heartbreaking . . . timely . . . Beschloss's broad scope lets you draw important crosscutting lessons about presidential leadership. -Bill Gates Widely acclaimed and ten years in the making, Michael Beschloss's Presidents of War is an intimate and irresistibly readable chronicle of the Chief Executives who took the United States into conflict and mobilized it for victory. From the War of 1812 to Vietnam, we see these leaders considering the difficult decision to send hundreds of thousands of Americans to their deaths; struggling with Congress, the courts, the press, and antiwar protesters; seeking comfort from their spouses and friends; and dropping to their knees in prayer. Through Beschloss's interviews with surviving participants and findings in original letters and once-classified national security documents, we come to understand how these Presidents were able to withstand the pressures of war-or were broken by them. Presidents of War combines this sense of immediacy with the overarching context of two centuries of American history, traveling from the time of our Founders, who tried to constrain presidential power, to our modern day, when a single leader has the potential to launch nuclear weapons that can destroy much of the human race. Praise for Presidents of War A marvelous narrative. . . . As Beschloss explains, the greatest wartime presidents successfully leaven military action with moral concerns. . . . Beschloss's writing is clean and concise, and he admirably draws upon new documents. Some of the more titillating tidbits in the book are in the footnotes. . . . There are fascinating nuggets on virtually every page of Presidents of War. It is a superb and important book, superbly rendered. -Jay Winik, The New York Times Book Review Sparkle and bite. . . . Valuable and engrossing study of how our chief executives have discharged the most significant of all their duties. . . . Excellent. . . . A fluent narrative that covers two centuries of national conflict. -Richard Snow, The Wall Street Journal

  • American History in swirling fog through a Hollywood lense and rose tinted glasses with a generous coat of thick whitewash.

Right from the first chapter, it reeks of whitewash and speculation. The content in the early pages are about the Flight from Washington of the President across the river and up a mountain. Its explained he is off to organise his troops. Which seem not to be there. Its an invasion by the British to punish the US for terror raids on Canada and the outright murders of those who will not capitulate to be part of the expanding USA. He gives a different weaker excuse for British aggression. He also excuses all the 2nd Amendist's who fail to turn up to fight off the Brits. Then to pour scorn on the Brits he creates tales of how the British were disrespectful and juvenile when there is no evidence apart from defeatist chit chat sold as bold truth centuries on. For those not in the know the Brits burn Washington to the ground and go back home. The US president realises that to mess around any further will possibly end the USA as an independent nation and worse have him hanged as the commander in chief. This leads to the second chapter of the next president who also realises that the Brits could come back and ignores the calls for war on the British empire. What is common is that the 2nd Amendment, the right to bear arms against enemies foreign and domestic seems to be pointless as no one from the US side turns up for the party. I enjoy American History but so much is written by people who are born and raised in the bubble of the states that almost programmes even the most intellectual into believing the hype corrupted details and the true intention of the past players. It is Hollywood repainting that fogs American readers and writers views. My case is proven as this book is to highlight how Presidents were drawn into conflict and yet it ignores the important verses like the "Indian wars" that would tell of the shame and disgust and also the US Civil War which would also force the author to nail his colours to the mast. The book is not well enough balanced and the bias of the writer is clear to see. I still recommend this book part for the information it does deliver but also as a case of how the US indoctrinates its citizens that the land has always been good and righteous and all the bad stuff was best swept under the carpet. If the options were more than just yes/no I would have chosen "Maybe"
