Additional InformationTHE SORROW AND THE PITY is one of the greatest documentaries ever made, delving into the Nazi occupation of France. Director Marcel Ophuls interviewed dozens of French, British, and German citizens, including soldiers, former Nazis, members of the resistance and collaborators. The result is an amazing portrait of ordinary people in extraordinary, and terrible, conditions. Incidentally, Woody Allen paid recurring homage to it in ANNIE HALL.

  • A disturbing, fascinating and engrossing watch of a shameful part of European history.

A revelatory piece of documentary making that explores France's collaboration with the Nazi's during WWII. Told over 4 hours. Focusing in particular on Vichy France, an area of France whilst not 'occupied' by the Nazi's was a puppet state for them. The brutality of both the Nazi's and especially the French towards their own citizens especially towards the Jewish community is a damning indictement of collusion. This explores the work of many ordinary citizens who collectively fought the occupation of their country by a foreign power and in so doing created the French Resistance. It also highlights the contribution given to them by the British and American agents in particular the work of the lesser known 'Special Operations Executive', which aimed to undermine and subvert the work of the Nazi's and their collaborators. A disturbing, fascinating and engrossing watch that highlights a shameful part of European history that must NEVER be repeated.

  • A fascinating glimpse of life in one french city from 1940 to 1944.

This documentary is an important historical record which depicts the time of the occupation of France (1940-44). It is full of meaningful interviews some of which are returned to throughout. Despite it being made entirely in black and white it captivates the audience and will give a sense of what it was like to live during this time.
