Not a bad way to defend your dream.", 4 stars out of 5 - "He has performed another ethnomusicological miracle, opening a can of worms while drawing us deep into the musical heart of a lost community.", 4 stars out of 5 - "Conjunto, corrido and jazz emerge from and mingle with R&B and pop as the band follow the story from innocent beginnings to the tragic, bitter end.", Ranked #6 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2005" - "History lesson as hallucination. • The downside of Los Angeles' modernization

One of Ry's most rewarding albums, for me. The CD comes with a booklet telling the story of a City of Los Angeles faux pas. The songs are all well written and performed with some excellent guest musicians and vocalists. To enjoy this album fully you have to embrace Ry Cooder for the artist he is, and accept the variety of his styles. It could be received as a rock musical with story intact???
