This film is based on a true story that occurred during the Second World War. Salomon Sorowitsch is the king of counterfeiters in Germany in the years leading up to the war. He lives a life of booze, woman, good food, the best clothes and gambling. Suddenly his luck runs out when he is arrested and thrown into a concentration camp. His skills as a counterfeiter are spotted and he is forced to help the Nazis in a counterfeit operation set up to finance the war effort and flood the British and American economies with fake currency. This is a film that is definitely worth watching even though it is subtitled. Giving the viewer an insight in just how the Germans treated their prisoners. What a dilemma, poor old Sally has to decide whether to help the Nazis and give his fellow prisoners a better standard of lifing, or, hinder them and expect serious repercussions.Read full review
Fascinating true story of how a brilliant forger and sundry printers were plucked from concentration camps in 1942 and formed into a crack team of forgers. The object of their Nazi masters was to wreck the economies of Britain and the U.S. by swamping them with fake banknotes. One of the great untold stories of the Second World War.
German film with good English sub-titles.In view of the current world financial crisis it is interesting to see how these men literally did print money during the war, especially with relevance to the pound.The Nazi treatment of both these people and the others that were interred in camps is all too believable.
A very absorbing film, that at times can be a little harrowing because of the subject matter. Nevertheless has its humane moments. The central character goes from self absorbed criminal to reflective humane leader. The film at times shows that life sometimes is about survival and what we are prepared to put up with in order to live. The end is itself quite moving. I really enjoyed this film as it made me think also it's amazing the schemes governments come up with at times of war;as this was true story carried out in the 2nd WW. Pinkflyingpig1
