ReviewsVariety - Steve McQueen, who demonstrates a painterly touch with composition and real cinematic flair, Empire - Hunger is a powerful, difficult piece that announces McQueen as a singular talent, and Michael Fassbender as an actor of note., The Independent - McQueen highlights the remarkable physical changes during a hunger strike rather than the impact the ordeal had on the outside world. The sympathetic portrait within this excellent film will cause much debate, and outrage

  • The final months of terrorist Bobby Sands

For much of the time, the film is wordless. McQueen – the artist here making his feature film debut – gives us forensically filmed episodes: a rubber-suited prison worker pausing momentarily before hosing down a wall "decorated" with a spiral pattern of excrement; ointment being applied to Sands's hideous pressure sores. Often difficult, sometimes repulsive, this is nevertheless an unforgettable piece of filmmaking.

  • Hunger

McQueen's brilliant film about the dispicable treatment of Irish Republican political prisoners at the hands of the shameful British State - viva Sands!
