ReviewsThe perfect book for anyone who knows that some of our best friends walk beside us on four legs; that compassion isn't only for humans; and that the relationship between two souls...meant for each other never really comes to an end., The Art of Racing in The Rain has everything: love, tragedy, redemption, danger, and--most especially--the canine narrator Enzo. This old soul of a dog has much to teach us about being human., I savored Garth Stein's The Art of Racing in the Rain for many reasons: a dog who speaks, the thrill of competitive racing, a heart-tugging storyline, and--best of all--the fact that it is a meditation on humility and hope in the face of despair., One of those stories that may earn its place next to Richard Bach's 'Jonathan Livingston Seagull,' Paulo Coelho's 'The Alchemist,' and Yann Martel's 'Life of Pi.', The Art of Racing in The Rain has everything: love, tragedy, redemption, danger, and--most especially--the canine narrator Enzo. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. • Easy Read - a real page turner!

This book is a must-read for every dog lover! The life of a dog - told by that dog, but in a way that is totally "human", From the first page to the last, the story had me....sometimes laughing....sometimes weeping a bit....sometimes saying awwww or wow -- but always enchanted. It's an easy, relaxing read and has become one of the books I've enjoyed reading most, in the past few years. I'm sure going to check out other books by Garth Stein!

  • a heart-wrenching book that cannot be put down

Great story, told as only a dog could tell it. It shows we humans the compassion and understanding that dogs possess. There is indeed an imperceptible bond between dogs and their people which is not always easily defined. The book also tells of the trials of family life and the tragedies that can happen. In spite of the few sad parts of the book, there is a really good ending which will bring a smile to your face.

  • A great read for pet owners and non-pet owners alike

Loved the movie and the book is just as good. This is one of the few books I would re-read in a couple of years because it is an amazing story.

  • Everyone should have an ENZO

Don't let the idea of a dog narrating the story, and thinking way to much like a human, dissuade you from reading the book. Just accept it and you will enjoy it. I don't care one whit about race car driving, but I can at least appreciate it more now, after reading this book. I not only read for enjoyment, but I like to learn new things from each book. And I did.

  • Not My Usual

This kind of writing is not in any way my usual "cup of tea." Everyone told me that the book would make me cry. I said it would never happen. I was wrong. I cried. This is a very good and light read for anyone that loves pets, people and life. You will hope that some of it never happens to you and you will hope that a lot of it does. I enjoyed it and I recommend it. You will cry. DT

  • Very moving

The book was very moving, and at times made me cry. Only because I love dogs and animals of course, and could picture the dog and his emotions clearly. Would recommend to anyone. A must read. AA++++

  • Good book for All Dog Lovers

The story is deep, covering quite a few of life's bumps along the way. However, the dog holds life together until he no longer can. Very moving. Highly recommend.
