  • Excellent sound

This is my second Yamaha Natural Sound Receiver. It's 90 watts x7 power has a big dynamic presence. In 2009 this model listed for $479 retail. You can find a good used one for less than $100. Be sure to get the remote and manual, it's somewhat complicated to set up Because it's an older model the 4 HDMI(Ver. 1.3) inputs aren't 4k compliant. On the plus side the unit will upconvert composite and component video input and send it out via HDMI. With over a dozen sound field options and multiple inputs the RX-V565 receiver will give you premium sound at an affordable price.

Buying this in 2021 is a clear compromise, because it can only carry a 1080p signal. If you put a 4k device through it, you're either not going to get an image, or it will be downgraded. That's the main thing to keep in mind, dear reader. You can still run a cable directly from a 4k device to the TV, and then run a separate cable for audio to this receiver and not have to lose a thing. As time goes on, this will be useful for more and more niche applications. That aside, this is a great receiver. Plenty of inputs and sterling audio quality still make this a top notch addition to a stereo system. The AM/FM is a nice touch, and the antenna extension can work with any speaker wire/coax cable you happen to have lying around. No need to scare up the official Yamaha antennas. All the settings can be edited using the front display. This was a huge blessing for my set up, which does not lend itself to adding a monitor. The other side of this coin is that the menus are a little labyrinthine and complicated. Reading a manual for the first time in a decade humbled me. I still struggle understanding the use of the enhancer and which channels I'm about to switch on or off. Another bell of note is the HDMI passthrough. You can still transmit your HDMI devices to the TV when the receiver is turned off. If you don't want to say bye to your TV speakers for good, that's handy to have.

  • Time Consuming

The receiver works fine but having to read a 70 page manual on all the things it can do can be overwhelming, and time consuming.
