i got these for 15 bucks on criagslist, a great deal. I use them in my bedroom, they're perfect, the wood encasing looks great, looks good without covers too. I'd love any tips on how to care for an old pair of speakers, these have a slight hole in one of the woofers that I plugged up. The bass is outstanding! I listen mostly to hip hop and my receiver is still set to a pretty low bass setting. Screw computer speakers, or over priced 2.1 units, I love my old school setup. 89 denon receiver and the JBL's are all I need, perfect for all my G-funk needs.
I found a pair of JBL-2600's for $100 at a second-hand store, and the price compared favorably with ebay on my smartphone, so I took a chance. As anyone with a knowledge of physics would expect from a 6-1/2 inch 'woofer' and JBL's titanium dome tweeter, they produce accurate and realistic midrange (voice) and highs (cymbals and lead guitar), but are lacking in bass. I compared them with and without my JBL powered sub-woofer, and it was as if the bass drum and guitar were thrown under a blanket without the sub-woofer. I don't expect window-rattling bass from a bookshelf speaker, but I could not listen to these speakers alone for any length of time without going, "Where's the BASS?!"
I recently repaired and restored an old stereo receiver, which put me in the market for a pair of decent speakers to go with it. Although the receiver itself was a JC Penney all-in-one unit of modest quality from the mid-80s, it still played well once restored and had a decent 2x30 watt power output rating. I started looking for speakers on eBay and was pretty discouraged with everything I found at the time--all the offerings were at the extremes of expensive high end equipment or cheap no-name junk. Then I came across a listing for the JBL 2600 stereo loudspeakers. I wasn't sure if they would be suitable for use with my receiver or not, but they arrived and I hooked them up to find out. The good news is that these speakers have incredible output quality. The sound is rich, clear and detailed. There is plenty of bass, a good clear midrange and sharply defined treble output. The sound is well balanced. When I played a variety of sources (turntable record, cassette tape and FM radio) into these speakers, there was no sign of any one frequency towering over or lacking as compared to the others. It didn't seem to take a huge amount of power to drive these speakers. Even with the volume dial set low (two or three out of a possible ten) their output was loud enough to be heard easily. The only potential pitfall of buying speakers like these has to do with their age. The pair I bought were over twenty years old but they'd been very well cared for. This particular pair of speakers could easily have passed for "never used". However, one must be aware that foam surrounds can rot, speakers can be overdriven to the point of damage, and people may not always take the best care of their speakers. All of these points should be checked out before you buy--so be sure to ask the seller first if their listing is unclear. If you have a stereo receiver with a power output rating between 10-100 watts (as mentioned in the manual for these speakers), these speakers will not let you down. They'll make your music sound as good as it can, and their size is ideal if you don't have room for huge speakers.Read full review
Oh'gush,I don't know where to start but,I did it! I came,I saw my purchase and I completed what I started.The one out the two accomplished bedroom sound stations. In Newyork City,straight from Crown Heights Brooklyn,where we from? "Crooklyn" What's ur name big guy? Must be me,they use to call me "Chang" when I had associates. Now it's just "Terrill" He positioned right,QX5 QSC is the power source,one of the best amplifiers out. JBL's is good speakers to connect wit them,sounds great!!!
