A thoroughly enjoyable and (mostly) convincing production
Excellent singing, and very acceptable acting. The idea of producing this opera as a film - i.e. not on a stage but in actual buildings and streets is quite adventurous and, for the most part, it works well. But I did feel, at times, that the film set and acting were a little too subordinate to the music. The thing that jarred the most was, near the end, when we are confronted with the dying Mimi who, for some reason is lightly dressed, with exposed, bare arms, complaining that she is oh, so cold. The others present, including Rodolpho (to his everlasting shame) are so taken up with their singing and general performing that not one of them thinks to take off his coat and lay it tenderly over the poor woman to try and keep her warm. This is a direction fault, I think, rather than that of the artists. Another thing which irritated me is that, early on in the opera, Mimi comes over as quite precocious and is portrayed as having an almost "come hither" attitude to the various men at their first encounter. That goes against the grain when, I think, the intention when the opera was conceived was to portray innocence. But these are small gripes. Two great voices; two great actors.
Being filmed in a staged fashion as opposed to a cinematic one gave it an intimacy that the opera requires. Two great artists with fine support from other members of the cast make this production a real operatic and theatrical treat. Captivating story and wonderful voices
Saw this on TV and loved it then. This was a present for my boyfriend who has become a big fan of classical music. He hasn't watched the DVD yet, but he also enjoyed the TV production, so I don't doubt that he will enjoy watching and listening to this time and time again.
