About this product

Product Information

King Of EuroSleaze Jess Franco (BLOODY MOON, MACUMBA SEXUAL) takes on the '80s Cannibal genre and delivers a jungle sickie like no other! When a safari of sexy babes and violent boneheads ventures into native-crazed wilderness, Uncle Jess unleashes a deluge of relentless nudity, dubious anthropology and his own brand of cut-rate carnage. Ursula Fellner (SADOMANIA), Al Cliver (ZOMBIE), Robert Foster (CANNIBAL TERROR) and Gisela Hahn (CONTAMINATION) co-star in this original 'Video Nasty' - also tastefully known as SEXO CANNIBAL and MANDINGO MANHUNTER - with something to offend everyone.

  • Two gems from Jess Franco.

The Devil Hunter The first thing that strikes me about this tropical kidnapping romp is the dubbing, which is probably among the worst I have witnessed. Bored sounding actors drawling terrible, broken dialogue (Antonio Mayans plays Jack, who's breakdown deserves a special mention here) amidst a myriad of half-hearted sound effects - the flowing of jungle rivers is represented by what sounds like someone agitating a glass of water. None of this can be blamed on prolific Spanish Director Jess Franco (credited here as Clifford Brown). And yet this remains one of the director's most derided films. Much as I would like to disagree, it isn't difficult to see why. The plot is stretched way beyond interest, and no-one involved seems particularly invested - apart, perhaps from starlet Ursula Buchfellner as Laura. Any of Buchfellner's acting prowess is well and truly squashed by whoever is voicing her - that, and being given very little to do - but her enthusiasm keeps things afloat. Her natural glamour is a bonus too. Also of note, Muriel Montosse, billed here as Victoria Adams, who would make such an impression as the sexy main character in 1983's 'Cecilia', features briefly as the 'girl on yacht.' By far the main point of interest for me is a kind of sub-plot involving a bug-eyed jungle murderer. I say 'kind of' sub-plot, because he doesn't really have a story, he is just 'there' but his involvement grows as the 102 minutes roll along. Naked and with bloodied, raw, oversized eyes, he makes an impressionable figure. Franco cannot help but feature him in close-up, which only goes to expose how crude the optical effects are, but it is still a powerful look. His appearance is slowly built up throughout, and accompanied by painful wheezing and groaning sounds. For me, this poor lad is the star of the show. She Killed in Ecstasy Buoyed by his film 'Vampyros Lesbos', Director Jess Franco quickly employed a very similar cast and crew for this typically leery-titled horror/drama. The mighty Soledad Miranda plays the wife of Doctor Johnson, whose experiments with embryos has caused him to be vilified by his peers and banned from continuing his work. Taking care to wear a series of tight shirts unbuttoned to reveal some handsome jewellery, he then goes through spiralling turmoil ending in suicide. His wife determines to get revenge on those who drove him to this. As with just about all Franco films, scenes of tension are accompanied by exotic and jaunty jazz music that sometimes works because it is so inappropriate and sometimes doesn't. The former Mrs Johnson's subsequent seductions-prior-to-murder are scored with grimly fitting incidentals, and together with Franco's obsession with close-ups and zoom-outs, concoct a heady, disorientating nightmare. Surprisingly, Franco regular Howard Vernon is the first person to cop it. Apart from making her name in 'exploitation' films, there's no denying Miranda's power as an actress. She is tremendous throughout despite (on the DVD I am watching), she is buried beneath unbefitting dubbing and subtitles, and has a genuine sense of presence that makes the routine seduction/death plot line far more interesting than it would have otherwise been. Her early death on the eve of what looked like global stardom remains a great tragedy.
