About this product

Product Information

Clint Eastwood's CHANGELING follows closely in the footsteps of his earlier Oscar winner, MYSTIC RIVER. Both films in fact centre on a missing child and can boast a dark, minimalistic yet enthralling atmosphere. But while MYSTIC RIVER was based on a Dennis Lehane novel, CHANGELING carries a particular weight because it is inspired by a true story, and one that isn't largely known. Angelina Jolie stars as Christine Collins, a single mother working in 1928 Los Angeles, when her son goes missing. A boy is returned to her months later by the police, but she is shocked and disheartened when she realizes that the boy isn't her son. Joined by a crusading pastor (John Malkovich), Christine battles for justice against the corrupt L.A.P.D. while she continues to search for her child.

Joined by a crusading pastor (John Malkovich), Christine battles for justice against the corrupt L.A.P.D. while she continues to search for her child. Eventually her fight against the cops lands her in a mental hospital, where she is surrounded by others with a similar plight. Clint Eastwood has definitely crafted another Oscar-worthy film while Jolie gives an authentic, anguished and heart wrenching performance. The rest of the cast also gives highly refined interpretations, notably Amy Ryan as a prostitute imprisoned in the mental hospital. Screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski had been best known for his work in science fiction (BABYLON FIVE) and graphic novels, but he makes an adept transition to feature drama with this film, its unusual focus on the victim and her struggle for justice, rather than on the criminal and the crime, bringing further depth to it.
ReviewsHollywood Reporter - Clint Eastwood again brilliantly portrays the struggle of the outsider against a fraudulent system, Variety - A thematic companion piece to MYSTIC RIVER but more complex and far-reaching, CHANGELING impressively continues Clint Eastwood's great run of ambitious late-career pictures. Emotionally powerful and stylistically sure-handed...

Great film, but plays loosely with the facts.

Astonishingly sad story (not as the blurb says "A true story" but 'based' on a true story.) However, it is an excellent film. Disturbing and not an easy watch. I've read several books on Stewart Gordon Northcott and the film does play loosely with the actual facts, but it does relate truthfully to the awful story of Christine Collins. After Christine's only son goes missing, she reaches out to the LAPD to help her find him. They find a boy fitting her son's description five months later, but she insists that he is not her son. Truly shocking. Excellent film though. I'm not sure that I could watch it again.

    A very sad film

I respect the story and the actors but it's just such an average movie that tries hard to be dramatic and tense, but fails miserably and kind of makes you stare at the wall for more entertainment.

  • A question of how cruel a human can become.

This film is beyond belief. A world of quiet horror whilst maintaining a normal life. A bond of mother and child. How do we cope when our child goes missing . A heart rendering suspense that makes you feel overwhelmed.

  • Angelina amazing in this role

Brilliantly acted by Angelina - very moving but also very disturbing and horrific to see what this poor Mother has to go through.

Had to buy this as saw part of it on TV, unfortunately the channel closed before the end of the film! Glad I bought it as it is a really fascinating story.

  • A film that is compelling to watch.

The truth concerning very bad practice by the American authorities was unforgiveable. The film portrayed this very well and the cast were so well cast for their parts in this film.
