ReviewsStudents in primary grades will have a whale of a time reading the books in this engaging nonfiction series. Each title has colorful pages and chapter heading to capture the interest of young readers as well as short, straightforward sentence structure to help keep them reading. Captivating photographs of whales in the wild are present on each spread and feature up close images of body parts such as blow holes and baleen. Each book contains a two page life cycle spread that consists of a brief paragraph and a diagram illustrated with a photo of a mother and her baby. Also of interest is the "Amazing but True" section that provides interesting information about the species. This series will be a fabulous addition to any elementary school library collection. Glossary. Websites. Table of Contents. Index. Recommended., It is remarkable that blue whales are the largest mammals on earth, bigger than the dinosaurs that once roamed the earth. But even if they did not have that claim to fame, these ocean dwellers have many amazing qualities. Very young readers can learn about blue whales in this book, part of the "Up Close" series. The book details how big blue whales are (each weighing more than thirteen elephants) as well as their reproduction, hunting, and feeding behavior (this enormous mammal eats tiny krill). Then there is that wondrous body: huge flippers, fluke, and blowholes. Rake includes well-written information about whales' deep sea life and reproduction. One interesting fact: baby blues are larger than some other adult whales! The book includes colorful illustrations, life cycle chart, glossary, list of more books to read, internet sites, and an index. A good book and series for non-or very young readers. 2010
