If you like a drop of wine then you should enjoy this film. Its funny, serious and tells a great story of the Californian wine makers battle against the Mighty French. I have watched it time and time again with a drop of red for company! Hope you enjoy the film as much as me, we are even planning a wine tasting trip to the Napa Valley to see where the film was made and try some of California's finest wine along the way!
Alan Rickman plays Mr Spurrier as a real snob - I don't know if this true, but Spurrier did come from a wealthy background, so maybe.. Anyway, Rickman et al work together to give the pioneering feel of American wine in the 1970s, and the look of the film keeps that in mind. There are definite wine references- more so than Sideways or A Good Year, that make this a proper 'wino' film. That said, I did watch it twice, and the commentary etc add in the form of extras. It's a niche film but portrays a very important point in wine industry history - the Yankees are coming! - and for this reason I'd recommend a look.
I really liked this movie. It's fun if your into wine, you don't have to be a buff either to get the jokes. Alan Rickman is particularly good. Chris Pine is in it in one of his pre Capt. Kirk roles and has it has to be said a dodgy wig on. All in all though, a fine fun film!
Everything as promised, perfect in every way
