As in MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS and BEING JULIA, this period comedy brings wit and style to its depiction of 1930s London. Based on Winifred Watson's novel, MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY begins with the title character, a frumpy governess winningly played by Frances McDormand (FARGO), being turned away from her employment agency. After losing her job prospects and all her earthly possessions in a mishap, Guinevere Pettigrew isn't sure where her next meal is coming from. But some cleverness leads her to the door of aspiring actress Delysia Lafosse, a woman who needs a social secretary to juggle her three men: a nightclub owner (Mark Strong), a son of a theatre producer (Tom Payne), and a piano player (Lee Pace). The first two offer her a chance at stardom, but the pianist can't give her anything but love. In a single day, Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia navigate the ever-stormy waters of love, while she learns that romance may not only be reserved for the young.
With its witty script and jazzy score, MISS PETTIGREW may seem feather-light at times, but there's an undercurrent of sadness that gives the comedy a bit of weight. World War II is just about to come to London, and the echoes of the previous war still haunt those who can remember it. Unsurprisingly, McDormand gives a fantastic performance as the title character, but the effervescent Adams continues to surprise, even after turning in great work in JUNEBUG and ENCHANTED. As impressive as the two female leads are, there are some excellent performances from two male co-stars: Ciaran Hinds (MARGOT AT THE WEDDING) is perfectly warm as a lingerie designer Miss Pettigrew encounters, and Pace (PUSHING DAISIES) wins hearts as the faithful Michael. Costume designer Michael O'Connor also deserves praise for creating the film's eye-catching clothing.

Not Quite Like The Book
A warm, feel good film. Engaging and humorous, but not as funny as the book. One character who in the book was pleasant, friendly and helpful was changed too much in the film. She became nasty and scheming. It's a film for people who haven't, and don't intend to, read the book.

A divine little romantic comedy
This movie is fabulous. Frances McDormand is brilliant as Guinevere Pettigrew, a governess fired because of her plain looks, who engineers herself into the household of Delysia LaFosse (a wonderfully scatty Amy Adams). Discovering that she is in fact employed by a would-be musical star who has no idea what she really wants from life, Guinevere must help her find her soulmate from the 3 possibles - Mark Strong plays the club owner Nick who thinks of Delysia as possession to use whenever he likes, Tom Payne is Phil the son of a musical producer who is swept away with the idea of sleeping with the ladies who are falling over themselves to take the lead in his new show, then there is Michael played by Lee Pace (from Pushing Daisies) sporting one of the finest attempts by an American actor at an English accent, Michael is a just-out-of prison pianist who ended up incarcerated during an attempt to propose to our protagonist starlet. The movie takes shape after Guinevere takes her place at the centre of the characters alongside Delysia, her 3 suitors and also underwear king Joe and his faithless fiancee Edythe. The action takes place in London in 1939 on the eve of WWII. The writer does a fine job of balancing the farcical comedy with the drama of the impending tragedy to come. I found this movie by accident on satellite TV, I recommend to all who love romance, farce or just good old-fashioned entertainment. Should tick all boxes.Read full review

This film was described as a modern day Cinderella, but to describe it as that makes it a story with no depth. This it is not. This is set in the 1930s, with a lot of effort, going into creating something which is authentic. The storyline follows the life of Miss Pettigrew, who has previously been unsuccessfully employed as a governess. After being fired, yet again, she is faced with a uncertain future on the street. But in desperation, she dishonestly applies for a position, which was not hers, and funnily, turns her life around. Her influence on the lives, of all she meets whilst carrying out her duties, is amusing, entertaining, and unpredictable, but will it all turn out happily ever after? This is a great film to watch, It is humourous, has a good storyline, and some great acting in it. A film not to miss.Read full review
