Superb film. Great performance by Mickey Rourke, understated but very resonant. Thoroughly recommended.
This may be a story about a fallen wrestler, but in reality of course this film is about Mickey Rourke's fall from grace. It is an utterly compelling piece. The film's credits are pink pop pink, blazing out at you- and instead of the film showing you the Wrestler at the top of his game in the 80s we get newspaper clippings during the credits. Fastforward to an unfamilar person who has been locked out of his caravan home for not paying the rent money. Rourke is superb here as the Wrestler. Knowing that he is killing himself with his lifestyle away from the ring and now earns the bucks fighting in front of a handful of lost supporters and working part time in a supermarket. These scenes are incrediby moving, highlighting the fall from grace. I'm not one to get heavily emotional, but his scenes with his daughter were incredibly moving. The film is simply a masterpiece. You don't have to like wrestling to like this film. There are two fight scenes which are very brief and to the point. The film uses POV when needed. It's also a joy to see the talented Marisa Tomei. Try and avoid the blurb on the back of the dvd which gives away most of the film. Enjoy this spectacular film.Read full review
