This is a delightful film about the slow rise of Coco Chanel, making her way as a fashion designer and the compromises she had to make on the way to achieve her dream to be independent after an early life of poverty and other peoples bidding. It depicts an early 20th century French world of changing social norms, morals and fashion. The constraints of corseted styles and frippery are replaced with practical, comfy long looks and the invention of stretch materials like jersey.The story is very engaging and entertaining and the attention to detailed period costume and decoration is fabulous. Opulent, tasteful and utterly believable. I bought this film because I am a fan of Anne Fontaine the fashion designer and stumbled across this by mistake.
