Record producer and song-writing impresario Joe Meek is renowned for breaking UK artists in the American market. His biggest success came in 1962 with The Tornados' hit 'Telstar' which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. This was the first time a British band had reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and catapulted Meek to industry-wide recognition. Meek was notable not only for his commercial triumphs, but also for his technical wizardry inside the recording studio. Despite possessing no actual musical ability, he revolutionised the way sound engineers made records by introducing innovative new techniques to the process. However, the success Meek enjoyed was short-lived and tainted by a catalogue of personal scandals. A drug-addicted, flamboyantly gay man (at a time when homosexuality was prohibited in the UK) with mounting debts and a fascination with the occult, Meek's frustration led him to commit murder and, finally, suicide.
Director Nick Moran brings James Hicks' play TELSTAR to the big screen with actor Con O'Neill in the lead role and Kevin Spacey co-starring as Meek's business advisor, Major Banks.

Fascinating story of a 1960s popular music pioneer
This is a dramatisation of the life of Joe Meek, the pioneering British record producer and songwriter who was active in the 1960s. A funny and tragic story of a man who didn't fit in and didn't much care. He did care about the music, though. Many soon-to-be-famous names crossed his path in his makeshift recording studio in a flat above a travel-goods shop in Islington. Dazzlingly acted by Con O'Neill and J J Feild in particular, it features in smaller roles Ralf Little, James Corden and even Endeavour Morse himself, Shaun Evans in a previous incarnation. A sense of place and of time is very well recreated. Very much worth watching.

A FILM WORTH SEEING
I was interested in seeing this film again I am old enough to remember the new headlines of the 2 deaths and I had watched this film about 10 years ago on TV. I thing I watched a longer fuller version of the film on TV. A good story afraid the lead actor mumbled a few lines that I missed. It brought back to me those hectic days of the 1960s. I am particularly fond of the Telstar music and was interested in how it was made plus I liked the other music that was showcased.
