The story this film tells has only incidentally to do with Darwin's theory of evolution... It is mostly a family portrait, depicting a troubled period of Darwin's life : now, I'm not saying the story is not interesting in itself and that it cannot be the focus of a cinematographic exploration, BUT it is NOT what the title implies... One expects to get a glimpse of Darwin's exploration voyages and to understand how he came to believe in the theory of evolution, who influenced or consolidated his creed & so on, or the movie focuses entirely on Darwin's brooding instead of on the actual events of his life... Total waste of some very talented actors (Toby Jones is, as usual, a pleasure to watch :-) in this sentimental & uninspired ordeal. Wouldn't recommend it...

A wonderful film, extremely interesting in terms of the evolutionary theory but also very personal and emotional. A very acurate perception of an inspirational man, you'll learn things that you're not taught at school, that aren't deemed educational, such as about his family, but you will respect the man much more for knowing about it.
Touching story of the agony of mind inflicted on scientist Charles Darwin by the writing of his groundbreaking book, On the Origin of Species. For years the book is hidden away, unpublished, while Darwin thinks about the repercussions the book will cause - not least on his own devout wife and his beloved young family. Real-life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly are excellent as the Darwins, whose tender relationship becomes inreasingly stressed by Darwin's indecision over his book.
