I have been after a 50mm prime lens and as a Nikon owner consider the 1.8 and 1.4. In the end, I decided to go for this slightly larger aperture version, as astro photography is something i want to experiment, but i really just wanted it mainly for snapping the kids at play etc, and don't always want to stick a lens weighing a kilo on my camera that already weight a kilo. The lens is tack sharp, and and very sturdy and well built. Easy to manually adjust or readjust focus, or just leave it on auto focus. I found this to focus reasonably fast, however not as fast as the majority of my gold ring lenses. If you are shooting at the wider apertures this may be an issue, as the depth of field is tiny, and you will get the eyes out of focus as people move slightly. I started to use continuous auto focus taking close up portraits of my son. On the whole, this is an amazing piece of glass for the money, but I am not convinced I really needed the 1.4, but its on my camera most of the time i'm around the house. The bokah on this is pretty nice, so lovers of the blurred backgrounds will really like this, with lights squashing out to be appearing mostly rounded and fairly smooth. shooting wide open this is a specialist tool, but on the whole its a nice versatile lens, and would recommend it, but not necessarily over the 1.8 - I would test drive both to work out what works best for yourself.Read full review

Quality product, and perfect for it's specific purpose. Not good for crowded Art Gallerys, toooooo many people will walk in front of you.

Not the sharpest or most durable. but by today standards very fast. With the newer sensors low light is very usable..

It was a gift for xmas, but of course I had to try it out for myself. What a superb lens! Each picture I took had great depth of field and a dream-like quality to it. Super quiet motor when focus hunting, it is a great all round lens to use.
Great lens for portraits

LOVE this lens. I bought it because my 18-55 lens wasn't allowing for very good indoor shots, which is the majority of what I'm trying to capture. I love that I can basically keep it on 200-300 ISO and still get great shots indoors.
