I have never warmed to Greta Garbo and her catalogue of ill-fated heroines but her place in cinema history is undeniable and no self-respecting film buff would deny her representation in a film collection. This Warner Brothers set brings together the best of her sound movies in excellent prints. The absence of all but the most cursory notes is a disappointment however, as are the ‘extras’ which are confined to theatrical trailers – it takes a strong stomach to watch Freddie Bartholomew’s ‘direct to audience’ invitation to watch ‘Camille’ – and, somewhat inexplicably, the 1921 Nazimova/Valentino silent version of the classic Dumas tale.
