  • Top old school mechanical SLR

The SRT 303b is a seriously tough mechanical SLR, but tough and heavy as it is, it is also beautifully made and has a satisfying balance in your hand. The rewind and shutter action is both smooth and satisfyingly tight. This was clearly made with a brief that had precision, quality and reliability at the top of the list. Everything but the light meter is mechanical, so it will continue to work in a Siberian freeze or a tropical heatwave. If you compare it with the game changing Olympus OM1, which was around at the same time it lacks the OMs sophistication,it looks and feels huge and heavy alongside, but you also need to remind yourself, as one of the USA's top selling SLRs it was the camera of choice for GIs in the jungles of the Vietnam war. Many of those iconic shots from that awful war were taken on a Minolta SRT. Hook it up with equally brilliant Minolta 28mm or 50mm glass (about 40 quid) and some Ilford FP4 and you have the ultimate B&W street tool. Tough it is.
