The Camera You Couldn't Afford In The Eighties

This was a high spec camera in its day and is a good step up from the entry level film cameras available today. I had my model serviced by a professional technician (see the wee camera shop at the top of Morningside Road in Edinburgh) and it is as good as new. It is manual but has an electronic system that allows aperture led auto exposures, and it opens up the world of amazing Pentax K lenses, although the standard Pentax lens that came with it is perfect for 90% of photos anyway. I can paraphrase Ken Rockwell with this one: it doesn't get in the way of taking a good picture. This has become my main camera. I don't really need anything else.

  • As described very happy good camera

Lovely camera. Bought as a gift for my partner and he loves it, having done some research he thinks it is one of the best entry level cameras for someone looking to take up photography. Due to age the camera wasn’t shooting on every release when it first arrived, but I solved this by winding the crank and shooting for a few minutes till it corrected itself. The camera is a good size and very sturdy and easy to use. Very please.

  • Rejuvenates ME Super

When I decided to try my old Pentax ME Super the winder/shutter no longer worked. Repair estimates were £100 - £200 or more so buying a replacement body was attractive. I am pleased to say that my purchase of this item has proved a great success. In very good condition and works perfectly. Thoroughly recommended.

It's a used camera, almost 40 years old. It is a Christmas present for my grandson. How am I supposed to review it? What can I compare it with? The camera I bought is in excellent condition for its age.

  • Best simple 35mm camera ever made

The Pentax ME Super is the perfect walk around film camera. It's solid, it's small, and it's got a massive viewing area. It also generally comes with quality Pentax M lenses. And because it only uses the battery for the light meter, it tends to run forever without needing a new one. Performs superbly in most available light conditions when a lens with a big aperture is attached (the standard lens supplied was a Pentax A or M model f/1.7 50 mm prime, but you could also get up to f/1.2). The smaller the largest aperture, the less bright the viewfinder. The light meter itself is generally right, so you can shoot on Auto mode for guaranteed good results. There's the option to compensate for exposure in high-contrast situations by turning the ASA ring (which doubles as an exposure compensation ring). And you can shoot in full manual mode too (the funny little buttons above and below the mode selector lock move you up and down through shutter speeds). The camera turns off automatically (hence the long battery life), and the light meter comes on when you half-press the shutter button. Shutter action on a serviced ME Super (see below) is smooth and satisfying. There's no depth of field preview, so you either have to get used to knowing what the picture will look like (or you can apparently decouple the lens slightly to see what the thue depth of field will be). Recommended to get your Pentax serviced when you buy one: the ME Super was only made for a few years at the start of the 80s, so yours is guaranteed to be at least 30 years old. Even if it's been kept well by someone who cared for it, it will need rejuvenating so it doesn't die on you all of a sudden (the mirror getting stuck up is always a favourite). Harrow Technical service ME Supers for (at the time of writing) £66 per camera. Everything that needs to be replaced is replaced, the whole thing is checked, lubricated, and resealed. That's who I used, because they're staffed by ex-Pentax technicians who know the camera inside out—but you can get yours serviced anywhere that does film camera repairs. Telltale signs for poor quality ME Supers (look closely at the photos): lots of black specks on the focusing screen or mirror. Obviously eroded/flaked-off paint all around the film door—this suggests that the lights seals have decomposed and 'burned' the paint away, which isn't a problem in itself but will definitely mean the seals need replacing if they haven't already been done. All in all, a great camera for learning to shoot film, and one that will make you take more photos.
