This is the 4th of these devices I have had and I really do like them. They're simple to use, easy to back up data to a PC and it's a shame that Palm no longer exist except as a part of HP. They have their problems: the 4Gig drive is tiny by comparison to today's smartphones, the fitted hard drive was slowish, though my last 2 have had CF cards installed by a firm on eBay and no problems since. If you want a diary, games machine, dictaphone, MP3 player and loads of other things all in one you could buy an iPad, or you could search for a second hand LifeDrive and have a laugh!
The Palm LifeDrive was an innovative design and it was the first and only PDA to incorporate a Microdrive. At the time, 4GB was a huge amount of storage for a PDA. Unfortunately the Microdrive slowed it down, shortened the battery life, and was unreliable. This was a pity, because apart from this the LifeDrive is a very powerful device. Fortunately, all these problems can be fixed by replacing the Microdrive with a Compact Flash card. This radically improves the performance of the device, making it the most powerful PDAs available. The Compact Flash card is five times as fast as the Microdrive, but only consumes one fifth as much power. It also has no moving parts, which makes it far more reliable. This device has the fastest processor of any Palm device, and is even faster than a Palm T|X. It has all the benefits of a conventional LifeDrive ( fast processor, 4GB of internal storage, large screen, big battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0) without the usual disadvantages (slow response, poor battery life, unreliability). This is a top of the range PDA at a fraction of the normal cost.Read full review
I bought this product as my last one unfortunately got broken. I adore this little machine and it is my God where appointments, addresses and amusement is concerned. I have used other PDAs and my husband owns a similar model but downgraded to this one and I always return to this. It is more usful, this purchase, as it also has the tom tom addition and I will be able to view movies when I have installed the appropriate soft ware. I also like the fact I can purchase on line new software and hotsync on to the PDA straight away. It is small enough to fit in my handbag but it can do almost anything a pc can do.
I bought this because of it's great range of connectivity, especially the decent range of it's IR sender. It has by Palm device standards (of the time) a huge amount of storage. I love Palm devices for their quick clean OS interface and the good range of free apps. The only thing to dislike about this particular model is the fact that it's 4GB of storage is a hard drive which makes it slightly slower off the mark than most of these devices and could make it somewhat more fragile.
Excellent peice of kit - metal case, so very sturdy, nice big screen which you can flip to landscape for watching videos. 4meg disc so you dont lose info if the battery goes flat and SD slot for just about anything else! Of course, the Palm software is the best of its type I think and is very easy to use. Can't really think of any downsides, to be honest.
