George is a noble man who has spent much of his life on a crusade to stop shady local businessman Henry Potter (Lionel Barrymore û TREASURE ISLAND, DUEL IN THE SUN) from taking over the picturesque town of Bedford Falls. However, on a typically snow-covered Christmas Eve, George plays right into Potter's hands when his uncle manages to lose a considerable amount of their family business' money on the way to the bank. Ironically, Potter discovers the missing money and hides it, knowing that its disappearance will tarnish the Baileys' white-than-white reputation. Taking responsibility for the shortage and realising that he faces prison, George attempts to kill himself but in a bizarre twist of fate is visited by a guardian angel. I bought the original & coloured version of this film for my Husband for Valentine's Day as he likes this film so much and wasn't disappointed!! Adding colour to this timeless classic just enhances everything that's good about this film. Directed by Frank Capra in 1946 and stars James Stewart as George Bailey, living in Bedford Falls as a man who has his whole life planned out in front of him, but as you would expect things don't always go to plan. He is a well respected business & family man, married to Mary Hatch played by Donna Reed, who through a number of circumstances ends up in a job not of his choosing and becomes quite frustrated, then one day he almost loses everything and decides to end it all, but even that doesn't go the way he plans!! His guardian angel is sent from heaven to help him by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed!! James Stewart is amazing in this film, he plays his part well as he takes you on a real roller coaster ride with his emotions, you really feel his total despair and then sheer joy & happiness as he returns to his normal life with a more optimistic outlook!! It's a real feel good film, perfect for family viewing. Although this film is set at Christmas it's suitable for watching at any time of the year!! Love this film & I've watched it in the original black & white version so many times I've lost count, but the colourized version was new to me and made it seem I was seeing the film for the very first time.
