This 100-watt head is Peavey's take on a hot-rodded Marshall JCM 800. The sound is so close to the Marshall that there's a video on YouTube where they played one of these and a Marshall head, both covered with a sheet, and nobody in the room could tell which was which. I got this amp on a trade. I didn't really want it at first, as 100-watts was far too much power for anything I'd ever need. Also, like the JCM 800, these do not have a very useable clean sound. It's all crunch.... until you swap out the 12AX7 tubes with 12AU7 - then presto! All of the sudden you have a decent clean sound that takes pedals nicely. I've seen people complain that these are not versatile, but that's not the point - the point was to recreate that classic Marshall sound at a very low price and Peavey succeeded in every way. Marshalls of the JCM 800 era were not versatile either, but they were unsurpassed at what they did. And this amp fits right into that category. This is so close to the Marshall that they even copied Marshall's sucky preamp section. Yep, at low volume levels you cannot expect great overdrive tone. But increase the volume to where it starts pushing air and you'll understand how a single-channel amp with no reverb could be so awesome. Seriously, these are so cheap that you can't go wrong. Just make sure that you have a place where you can crank it up without frightening everybody with 2 city blocks, otherwise this amp might not be for you. Obviously a stage amp, not a bedroom practice amp.Read full review
Not so very long ago I remember putting up ungodly sums of money for one dimensional Marshall JCM's with tech that dated back to the 60's that sounded pretty good if you had some V-30s. Good luck putting pedals through the front end at a live show without ridiculous feedback and signal degradation, yes, even with a noise gate. Marshall never had a preamp option this sweet, and ol' Jim sure as hell didn't have Resonance, Presence and Texture controls then, period. I put a cheap Fish 'n Chips eq though G12K-100s with Duncan Humbuckers and cannot believe how this head sounds. Puts the TSL to shame. Big, heavy and bulky? Yes. Do I wish it had a sweet Fender clean channel? Yes. Can you go wrong buying this head? NO!!

Really does sound very very close to a Marshall JCM. Most wouldn’t know the difference. Even the low gain channel wants to bite. If you are looking for a very good clean channel then stay away. I Absolutely love this amp. Great for road use due to cost or great for studio use to get that jcm tone.

I want a budget friendly amp, that haves a lot of power and complements my Night Train (Vox) with a good overdriven tone for rock. This beast have a lot of balls and sounds loud as hell. As anybody said before, can't provide a good clean tone (at 1 on gain start to distort the sound), but for that I have my Vox amp. Have a lot of buttons and knobs to build your sound, and includes a effect loop, that works flawlessly with delays or modulators. My only complain is the difficulty to find a good tone for treble based solos. On 5th chords and low key tunes, literally shakes the floor!
Amazing all tube amp for the low price. Bad rep unfounded.
