Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis Electric Guitar

About this product

Product Information

With its mellow sound and classic look, it's hard to go wrong with the Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis electric guitar. Guitarists of any skill level love the crisp tone of the humbucker pickup and easily adjustable Tune-o-Matic bridge. This Gibson archtop guitar features a rosewood fingerboard inlaid with mother-of-pearl parallelogram markers. It also includes gold-toned hardware, Grover tuning pegs, and a trapeze-style tailpiece. Its hollow body is made entirely of maple hardwood while the neck is solid mahogany. The finish is the brilliant sunburst pattern with a bright center and dark edges. Modeled after Herb Ellis' personal Gibson ES-175, this guitar retains the features that Ellis found so rewarding throughout his career. This top-of-the-line product is designed to last a lifetime. The logo and signature are in an unusual place, which means you have a cool story to tell your friends and family. They were stenciled on the headstock because Ellis would often remove the headcover where the logo and signature would usually appear. He did that to put a damper on the strings for effect. There were also some minor changes made, such as moving the volume control to the pickguard. The power of this piece is undeniable. It has what the company called a “rounded Jazz profile,” befitting the jazz musician’s style. It has a jazzy bass range and a brilliant pitch. Check out alternate tuning methods to introduce a folk-style or a more distinct rock flair. Paired with a stage amp, it plays to a full auditorium, or you can use a portable amp and entertain friends and family in smaller spaces. This piece has a good sound and acoustic tone even when unplugged. Vintage guitars like the ES-165 have a traditional feel that's reminiscent of the days of Page and Hendrix. This one in particular is known as a semi-acoustic guitar. This style has a hollow body for extra acoustic flair while maintaining the power of a solid-body electric. Electric guitars like this are the backbone of rock and roll. However, just like acoustic guitars, they cross genre boundaries, and this is a model beloved by professionals and students alike. Take this instrument with you to practice, to your next session in the studio, or anywhere you want to play, and know it will look and feel great. Guitar players have loved this style since 1949, and you can see why for yourself by giving it a strum.

Outstanding example of a traditional jazz ax. Most beautiful flame and color of any Gibson I've owned (and there have been dozens). Really couldn't be much more pleased. Everything was right... Set up and action are spot on. Pots are quiet and smooth, neck is just the right shape, tuners are solid, binding is clean, lacquer without checking or cracking. As the first year issue of this model with a highly sought after blonde finish, I feel like I really scored a prize here. This is a keeper. Update to this review... Just used the "Herb" at rehearsal for the first time last night. All the boys-in-the-band loved it! The sound, the beautiful wood - all of it. Very pleased with this classic archtop.

  • Perfect jazz guitar

Medium/chunky neck, fat tone, old school appointments, great craftsmanship, nice feedback resistance. Everything you could want in a traditional jazz guitar. Highly recommended! It's basically a Gibson ES-175 with one pickup.
