great tool
Lets start out by saying I'm a flooring contractor and I've been using portable cable sheet sanders and various other models such as the paint remover sander for 30 years I now own about 10 sheet sanders which we use on every job almost every week for hours at a time sometimes depending on the job. I've been rebuilding them this whole time also which I usually do all my tools . I can compare it to the Milwaukee which is another very good sheet sander. The difference between the two is the Porta cable is a smoother running sander , not as aggressive as the Milwaukee . Using it for hours it doesn't make you hands tingle as much as the Milwaukee . After using a tool for long periods of time we need a tool with as much comfort as possible. Like most tools they need maintenance and that means blowing your tools out of dust after every use is the best recommendation for that sander to perform like a champ . The parts that will go most are bearings , cords and sleave will crack or split , brushes and of course the pads mostly wear out. Oh while we are on pads , a little trick , kind of , with a little know how of a drill you can make the Milwaukee pad fit a portable Cable . I did it very easily . Woodworking standard
These are the old standard in production and serious hobby woodworking. They are rock solid with enough weight so that you don't have to overexert yourself. Perhaps that's the reason they quit making them, because of their being of long lasting quality and ruggedly housed. If you can find one buy it! This PC 505 is truly Made in USA at its best. I won’t throw out my square pad and random orbit sanders. But this sander can handle large areas better in my view. It is comfortable to use , no heat build up from motor , powerful and very low vibration. There is a learning curve if you haven’t used one before but it has a place in any wood shop. This Porter Cable Model 505 half sheet sander is the 25th anniversary model. Out of production and we were lucky to find this on eBay and in pristine condition. Parts are still available and servicing should be easy to find. This is a powerful sander that doesn't work the user. Most sheet sander have gone to 1/4 sheets.
