Hornby Class 86 R289 dates from early 1988 and was one of the first models released that year by Hornby which featured optional / multiple identity transfers. The locomotive is powered by a Ringfield motor and features a working pantograph which can pick current up from a working overhead line such as the catenary system Hornby also released during 1988. R289 carries Inter-City Executive (Style 1) livery and does not come fitted with working lights: None of the Hornby Class 86 models do. The multiple identities supplied with these decal options are for 86228 'Vulcan Heritage' / 86255 'Penrith Beacon' / 86417 'The Kingsman' although of these only 86255 actually wore the 'Style 1' Inter-City Executive livery with 86228 / 86417 both wearing 'Style 2' with the full yellow ends. So for your information Class 86 locos 86102 / 86103 / 86245 / 86255 / 86404 / 86414(?) / 86416 / 86422 / 86424 / 86433 / 86438 were painted in this 'Style 1' livery for sure until repainted in the mid-1990s BR Sectorized colour schemes. The Hornby Class 86s are amongst the better made period offerings from this time and didn't suffer from poor paintwork if produced near to Christmas ... For examples of what I mean the Class 47 and Class 37 models released over the 1980s by Hornby were the worst offenders! The model is also quite powerful as it is adequately weighted down and fitted with traction tyres for better pulling power and rail adhesion. Always been a huge Class 86/2 and Class 86/4 fan so this model gets a firm 9/10 from me if in good boxed condition.Read full review
