A Modified version of the Air Force Survival Knife with a slightly different blade
The knife is a solid and well made but it is not the Air Force Survival Knife. Note that it is listed as 499 MOD and not 499. The primary differences are, this knife lack the finger groove (fuller) on the blade and the clip lacks a sharpened swedge. The knife is made in the USA but the sheath is made in China and the quality of the leather is slight lower than the sheath I received with the Ontario 499 which comes with a Sheath made in the USA. That said, both sheaths are perfectly serviceable. The build quality of the this knife (499MOD) is on par with that of the original 499. And again, you may find that you want to sand the handle to make it smoother and more finished. It really comes down to how much you want to spend and how important that finger groove and sharpened swedge on the clip point are to you. Good lower cost original knife by same manufacturer.
A less expensive product by the same manufacturer. Almost the genuine product except the blade is a bit different (no blood groove or sharpened top end) and the sheath is marked Made in Chine with the lack of extra sewing around the rivet on the handle strap. Beyond that, I do know. The sheath took a lot of Neatsfoot oil to treat it. Overall a very nice product. Now I know what "MODIFIED" means.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
