Hot wire cutters for polystyrene foam

I have wanted one of these cutters for ages for building scenery on model railways. The problem with expanded polystyrene is that it is difficult to cut with a knife, extremely messy to cut with a saw and static causes the bits to stick to your fingers. Enter the hot wire cutter, like a knife through butter. This set includes a hot wire cutter, instantly hot when switched on, a carving wand, particularly handy in shaping landscape profiles and an engraving cutter, handy for plunging into foam to form deep holes (fencing posts signals etc). All three cutters are interchangeable on a single handle (similar to a soldering iron in shape) and powered by a mains low voltage transformer. Excellent value for money and does what it says on the tin. Just let the tool do the job and you have perfect control of cutting.

  • Most critical review

Useless, awful and not fit for purpose

Awful all round. Only purpose it's fit for is the bin. It feels cheap and poorly made and is not fit for purpose. The handle feels like it would break within days. The female connection in the handle is lose and not even lined up correctly so the male connectors on the attachments lose contact and then you quickly lose hèat unless you hold them in place. The wire doesn't even get hot enough when it stays connect ànd is useless unless it's used like a saw blade. The hot knife managed to cut 3 grooves before it bent and I didn't even bother with the third attachment. I removed the wire and used it to make my own cutter only using a regular 9 volt battery and it worked a dream. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!! A chocolate teapot would be a better purchase

  • KNIFE BLADE IS TOO LIGHTWEIGHT

The wire cutter is excellent but because the knife blade is so long and narrow, it has bent. If that hadn't happened I would have rated the value as GOOD.

  • Model Railway

Using it for scenery production on model railway. Bought 50mm and 25mm 6x2 sheets from Wickes. Using a combination of all three attachments have managed to create hills and valleys looking realistic (covered in grass matting) very, very easily. Fumes are not too much of an issue. Gets hot enough not quite a knife thru butter but quite quick with no effort required

  • Value for money!

This tool is a big improvement on the tool I used 40 years ago. This tool cuts precisely, neatly and cleanly. The extra bits with it are a great asset for working qith most types of everyday materials.

  • worth buying just for the hot wire cutter

The stretched hot wire cutter proved very useful for shaping EPS,it's speed of action far exceeded that of the "hot knife"

  • Fragile, not suitable for heavy use

Granted I may have been a bit heavy handed but the 'knife' broke within minutes, snapped at the brass connection at the base of the 'blade'. Hot wire broke almost as quickly. Probably OK for thin sheets, but for anything with substance you need to be gentle.

  • Does what it's supposed to

Using this to cut 3inch foam which the thin bow wire goes through like a hot knife in butter. The long solid rod is ok but bends when cutting. Mine broke but a bit of brass rod crimped over the break and taking my time and it works well.
