Like earlier Wargame Construction Set releases, this third edition presents a solid foundation for deep, turn-based battle, along with several varied, historically based scenarios that can be "plugged in" and played on top of this basic rule set structure. Age of Rifles focuses on an era beginning in 1846 with the Mexican-American war, and ending with the rise of modern combat tactics and equipment that anticipated World War I. In all, the game features eight campaigns, covering a span of over a 60 years. <br><br>In addition to commanding the Mexican or American forces, players can take part in the American Civil War, as either the North or the South, and in other conflicts around the world, including the Austro-Prussian War and the Franco-Prussian War in Europe, as well as disputes that arose between outlying colonies and their European patrons, such as the Boxer Rebellion in China. Also, in the spirit of "Wargame Construction," players are free to design and play through their own custom conflicts, using nearly any combination of the units and maps provided for all scenarios or designing their own from scratch.
