Where season one had a dimly lit sultriness well reflecting the world of tabloid blind item sleaze. Season two (made short by the writers strike in 2008) suffers from a somewhat lighter and more upfront story telling. The choice to focus so much of the season's through line on a not at all veiled fictionalization of Britney Spears' (then) current very public meltdown proved poorly timed. Not just the youtube "leave Britney alone" guy, but professional star prodders Trey Parker (in the "South Park" episode "Britney’s New Look") and Eric Idle (in removing a lyric in the Broadway musical "Spamalot" that mocked the star) all better reflected the general feeling of the day that she is a person in a delicate position and in need of our collective compassion. Season two, all at once both lost its edge and became uncomfortable biting. An in production network series may have been able to pull itself out of the unfortunate story line, but the combo of cable TV production scheduling and the long writers strike was an impossible burden to get past. FX (the US broadcaster) should have given the show a third season to rediscover what had worked so well in season one. The DVD set itself; as commonly happens with lame duck seasons of less popular series, is a minimal effort compared to season one. Two disks, with just the episodes in a standard retail case. No frills, no extras. Season two resolves itself and gives a more closed ending then season one, making it worth a watch and even a buy... but mostly on the merits of its predecessor and not itself.Read full review
