The Intel i5-520M is a 64-bit mobile Intel Core processor. Intel Core CPUs have multiple cores and threads that work together. Instead of one CPU, you essentially have four. When a computing task is queued, a non-busy CPU processes it at lightning speed. As a mobile Intel Core CPU, this model is designed with a small form factor. This 2.4 GHz processor is also configured to use as little power and generate as little heat as possible under load.The Intel Core i5-520M is shaped specifically for a laptop, notebook, netbook, and other portable form factors. It supports both the Intel BGA1288 and PGA988 socket, which will be situated on the motherboard. This model is available in retail and OEM packaging. Both include any necessary heatsink, fan, and thermal compound. This dual-core processor also features an onboard GPU, which can handle HD video and light gaming. You can pair these processors with dedicated GPU hardware as well for even more advanced graphics processing.This Intel Core processor uses a 32mm die size. It uses a dual-core configuration, which means that it has two dedicated cores. However, it also features Intel Hyper-Threading. In many computing scenarios, Hyper-Threading lets these processors operate as if they had four dedicated cores rather than two. This Intel Core processor also has onboard 3MB cache. In fact, this cache is an Intel SmartCache and is a shared system that allows low-level memory access among each core and thread in a fast manner.The base clock speed of this dual-core configuration is 2.4 GHz and features Intel Turbo Boost technology. This feature essentially lets the computer overclock itself when the added GHz are needed. Here, the clock speed at turbo is 2.93 GHz. Note that this clock speed increase applies to each core and therefore each thread. The thermal design power or TDP of this Intel Core is just 35w overall. That power draw is at max clock speed as well. On average, this processor will draw much less.These Intel Core processors are designed to work with dual-channel, non-ECC memory. In particular, the specifications call for DDR3 memory at either 800 MHz or 1066 MHz. Since this has two memory channels, all DDR3 must be paired appropriately on the motherboard. Maximum DIMM bandwidth is just over 17 GB/s, and this Intel Core can support up to 8.3GB of RAM. A common scenario is two or four slots supporting up to 2GB each for a total of 4GB or 8GB.The Intel Core i5-520M is a capable product if you need to repair or upgrade your laptop. I bought this from a Korean seller, who sent it so well packed and cleaned as if it were new! Even though it's used there are no signs of degradation in performance.
