Leica M2 35mm Rangefinder Film Camera Body Only

About this product

Product Information

The Leica name can be practically synonymous with fine film cameras, and this Leica M2 35mm Rangefinder camera body can be a great example of why. This Leica camera body is designed to use 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm lenses; it can shoot particularly well with Bessa lenses. Once you attach your lens, you can see frame lines corresponding with the one you’ve chosen in your viewfinder. With a magnification ratio of 0.72, this Leica can have an exceedingly sensitive manual focusing system. These can be great cameras for snapping photos of moving objects, too. You can set the shutter speed manually to values ranging from 1 second to 1/1000 second. This camera can take many types of film, including Kodak black and white and Kodak color stock. You can easily get your photographs developed by the photo center in any big box store. One of the reasons why Leica M2 cameras are so highly prized is because only 83,000 of them were ever produced. These Leica cameras were manufactured by hand between the years 1957 and 1960. The cameras were manufactured in two colors: chrome and black. The camera’s gears are made of corrosion resistant brass. Each Leica M2 also sports top and bottom plates that are made of brass. The camera case was designed to be sturdy and to shut out all light to protect the integrity of light sensitive film. The M2 film counter can be manually set. In fact, this Leica has two release mechanisms: a rewind lever and a rewind button. When you take a photograph with a Rangefinder camera, you generally look through the camera with one eye. You must keep your other eye on the scene you’re photographing. You simply hold your Leica in your right hand with your index finger resting on the release button and use your left hand to support the lens so that you can concentrate on getting the specific shots you want.Your Rangefinder’s aperture is the small hole through which light enters your camera and hits the film inside it. It’s protected by a series of spring loaded blades that open and shut according to the manual settings you choose. This Leica was engineered to be used with an external light meter. You’ll use the information you get from this light meter to set your shutter speeds and aperture setting manually. On the front of these Rangefinders cameras, just to the left of the lens, you can find the field of view selector. This allows you to access 16 separate viewfinder functions. These functions are designed to help you take specific types of photographs, like portraits or shots of moving subjects. Right above the field of view selector, you can find the field window and the window that illuminates the bright line view selector frames. On the right side of the camera, you can find the Rangefinder window and the rewind release. Other controls, such as distance, depth of field, and aperture scales to help you focus can be found on the rings that surround the lens.

  • solid mechanical precision

If you are a fan of film as I am then the choices in the camera world are legion. However, just as good help is hard to find, good cameras are also few and far between. The legendary Leica m2 is one of those cameras for life, assuming that film is still available 20-30 years from now. What I like about this camera is the total absence of gimmicks and whistles. The smooth shutter whistles while you advance the mechanical gears effortlessly. You concentrate on your photo taking, focus, adjust exposure and compose. The magic of film photography reveals itself when you get the results back, so instant gratification folks, stick to digital. The only drawback of film is that a maximum of 36 exposures is allowed and if you are lucky can get up to 39. The flaws of the camera? slow loading of film due to a simple but awkward film spool that needs to be taken out and film threaded thru it, archaic rewind with no lever and absence of an internal meter. But the latter just means no chance of a malfuncitoning meter down the road while you retain the mechanical reliabie shutter. For purists, this is the camera to go to but don't use it to shoot action The camera was not designed for that.

  • Old School

If you shoot film, are interested in rangefinder photography and want a great user's Leica, this is a great entry camera. Built like a tank. Mine was born in '65 and will be working long after my digital body exhausts it shutter life or is no longer compatible with "X" software. I love my digital camera and lenses but the truly manual nature of this camera is where I find joy. Some dislike the fact you even have to manually reset the shutter counter but that is what makes an engineering marvel like this all the more a pleasure to use. This camera is free of buttons but for the shutter. It slows me down and forces me to think about exposure and composition in a way I do not with my digital camera. It is a teacher in the way my other digital cameras are not. As an added plus there are no spare batteries, CF/memory cards and other trinkets associated with digital. I use this camera for personal photography; to slow down and focus on what I want to photograph - to relax. What I spent to obtain this camera is less than 1/7th of what I've spent on digital bodies these last ten years and it will not be obsolete two years from now. It was worth every penny.

  • What's left to say?

I have been taking photographs for a long time on a variety of both digital and film camera systems. Nothing has come close to the feeling of satisfaction I get when this camera is in my hand. It's simple and reliable, and I couldn't ask for more.

  • Best Rangefinder Camera

This is the best ranger finder camera period. It is small and crafted like a Rolex watch. There is only one camera that can compare to this is the Leica M3, which has better ranger finder but the standard view finder will not work with 35mm lens. I like the manual film counter on the M2 than the auto one on the M3. With a Leica lens, I am surprise what a 50 years old camera can do. All operation is smooth and it is enjoyable to take a picture with this masterpieces.

  • Love it!

I am so happy with my M2. I have been using my M3 for about a year but did miss having the 35mm framelines. It's a true gem and only difference to note is the external frame counter. No big deal at all with regards to the frame counter. When out shooting with 35mm & 50mm lenses the M2 is with me.

  • Great camera

Leica M2; the viewfinder is bright and clear, and shows frame lines for a 35mm lens. The shutter speeds are accurate.

  • As Advertised!

This camera is everything people say about it and more! It's built like a tank! If you are into photography, and in particular film photography, you should do yourself a favor and get one. Even if you decide not to keep it for whatever reason, you can always say you owned a Leica and, most likely, get back the money you paid for it since the resale value is so great!
